Recently revealed bank statements appear to show that the alleged lover of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Nathan Wade, whom she appointed to be a special prosecutor in her case against former President Donald Trump, purchased airline tickets in her name. If accurate representations of what happened, the bank statements could show that allegations about DA Willis’ conduct are accurate.
As background, Trump co-defendant Michael Roman, a member of the Trump 2020 Campaign, alleged in a court filing in early January of 2024 that DA Willis had a sexual relationship with Nathan Wade despite having also appointed him special prosecutor, and the Daily Caller alleged that Wade was paid a higher rate than the state’s leading expert on RICO cases was initially offered.
Now, Daily Caller reporter Katelynn Richardson, in a post on X, showed the bank statements and captioned the screenshot by saying, “BREAKING: District Attorney Fani Willis’ alleged romantic partner Nathan Wade paid for plane tickets to Miami and San Francisco in her name, bank statements contained in a Friday court filing made by Wade’s wife in their divorce case show.” Here’s that tweet with the bank statements:
Then, speaking to the Daily Caller News Foundation about the bank statements and allegations, a criminal defense attorney in Atlanta, Philip Holloway, said “that the money that was paid to him benefited her in the form of lifestyle purchases.” Continuing, he added, “I think it supports the allegations made by Roman. It connects the dots and follows the money from the coffers of the Fulton DA’s office back to Willis in the form of costs of personal travel.”
Another Atlanta-area attorney, criminal defense attorney Andrew Fleishman, argued that the bank statements indicate that Roman’s allegations could be true. He said, “I think that [the bank statements], along with Fulton County’s delayed response, makes it much more likely that the factual allegations are true.”
Joining them was former deputy assistant Attorney General John Malcolm, who said, “It certainly looks bad. I would want to see how the two of them respond before saying definitively that this is all disqualifying. But, if these were County funds that were paid to him (and which were authorized by her) for case-related work, and it turns out that the funds were used to pay for romantic getaways by the two of them, that would certainly be disqualifying.”
Similarly, Jonathan Turley told the Daily Caller, “This certainly magnifies concerns and further justifies calls for Willis and Wade to recuse themselves from the case. Willis can argue that this was simply a relationship where Wade paid for flights as he did meals and other expenses. Yet, that still raises serious questions over Willis’ professional separation from Wade’s interests in appointing him and setting his salary.”
Outkick founder and attorney Clay Travis, speaking to Fox News Channel’s Harris Faulkner on the matter, said, “…I think these allegations by themselves, where often in the law I can speak as an attorney here, Harris, it’s not only impropriety, it’s the appearance of impropriety and the appearance that Fani Willis broke up the marriage of a man she hired, that she was sleeping with him, and that she paid him $650,000 in taxpayer money. That is more than enough to cause an issue here.”
