Comments from Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) criticizing Republicans over the contentious continuin resolution (CR) recently received a fact-check from X’s Community Notes. According to Jeffries, Republicans are more focused on passing tax cuts for “billionaire donors” than legislation to fund cancer research for children. However, Community Notes pointed out that Congress already passed a bill for this research earlier this year, claiming the issue is “moot.”
Speaking to CNN reporter Manu Raju, Rep. Jeffries said, “Republicans are marching America into a painful government shutdown that will crash, the economy, and hurt working class Americans because they would rather enact massive tax cuts for their billionaire donors, cancer research for children.” As the clip has been shared across X, crucial context was quickly added.
X’s Community Notes added underneath the post,”The children’s cancer research issue is moot. The Senate has passed the “Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0″, which House passed in March 2024. It’s now headed to POTUS for signature. Since it passed House in Mar, it didn’t need to be in any of the House Dec CR’s.” Conservatives on social media have also responded to these attacks from Democrats.
Libs of TikTok posted on X, “You literally can’t make this up. Democrats are blaming @elonmusk, Trump, & Republicans for k*lling the funding for kids cancer research. It was introduced as a stand alone bill and passed the Republican controlled House. It’s been held up since March in the Democrat controlled Senate led by Chuck Schumer. Why are Democrats blocking funding for kids cancer research??”
One person wrote in the comments section, “How about we fix the processed foods, chemicals in foods sugars in foods, flouride in water etc. and get rid of about, oh I don’t know 99% of children cancer. That won’t cost the government much of anything to make those simple changes.” Another user claimed, “Why won’t Democrats tell the truth about this? Republicans passed this in March of 2024. Schumer voted it down, it should be kept a separate bill but that would mean less $$$ in kickbacks from Big Pharm, check the voting on the US govt clerk page.”
Echoing similar sentiment, another person claimed, “Someone pointed out that with all the “funding” that has gone toward things like diabetes and cancer, for decades, that neither of them has been cured. B/c instead of the money going to authentic research, it goes to black holes where no improvement is ever seen, b/c of how corrupt the healthcare system is in reality.”
Another user said, “It seems like there’s a lot of confusion around the situation. If the bill passed in the Republican-controlled House and has been stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate, then it would be the Senate leadership, in this case, Chuck Schumer, that is responsible for the delay. This raises questions about the reasons behind the hold-up, which could involve negotiations or other political factors. It’s important to dig deeper into the details to understand why this particular bill hasn’t moved forward. Would you like to explore how such legislative processes work?”
