Vice President Kamala Harris once again caused much controversy and online hilarity, though this time it was because of a post on X (formerly Twitter) rather than one of her typical word salad speeches, the normal cause for Kamala jokes on the internet. The post that caused the controversy was about a Christmas dinner she was making with her husband, Doug Emhoff, and an appliance in the picture infuriated many on the right.
As background, the Biden Administration’s US Consumer Product Safety Commissioner, Richard Trumka Jr., appeared for an interview and said that gas stoves are a “hidden hazard” and “any option is on the table” in relation to potential regulations of them. He added, “Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”
The Biden Administration later clarified that it does not support banning gas stoves, with a White House spokesperson saying, “The President does not support banning gas stoves – and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is independent, is not banning gas stoves.” However, the damage had been done and many were furious over the commissioner’s comment about banning gas stoves.
In any case, VP Kamala Harris, posting a picture of her and her husband in the kitchen, said, “Merry Christmas to all. May your day be filled with love, family, and good food. P.S. We are making Christmas beef Wellington.” Rep. Matt Collins of Georgia, chiming in with a comment about the stove Kamala was using, said, “Is that another gas stove? 🧐”
Others quickly chimed in as well. Conservative commentator Tim Young, for example, said, “Gas stove with red meat on it… exactly what they want to take away from Americans.” Similarly, another commenter noted the expensive nature of the dish and Bidenflation causing problems for many Americans, saying, “Although money isn’t an issue for you, that costs you 30% more than when Trump was President.”
Mary Vought, in a quote tweet of Kamala’s post, said, “I thought we’re supposed to eat less red meat for the climate?” That tweet was referencing a moment in 2019 when, speaking out about cutting down on red meat to fight climate change, Kamala said she was up for reducing red meat. That came when CNN’s Erin Burnett asked, “Would you support changing the dietary guidelines, the food pyramid … reduce red meat specifically?” Harris said, “Yes, I would.”
Kamala also said, “I think the point that you’re raising in a broader context, which is that, as a nation, we actually have to have a real priority at the highest level of government around what we eat and in terms of healthy eating because we have a problem in America. We can talk about the subject of this conversation, we can talk about the amount of sugar in everything, we could talk about soda. We could go on and on.”
Continuing, Kamala said, “So the answer is yes. I will also say this: the balance that we have to strike here, frankly, is about what government can and should do around creating incentives, and then banning certain behaviors. Just to be very honest with you, I love cheeseburgers from time to time, right? I just do. But there has to be also what we do in terms of creating incentives that we will eat in a healthy way, that we will encourage moderation, and that we will be educated about the effect of our eating habits on our environment. We have to do a much better job at that, and the government has to do a much better job at that.”
