Tragically, Beech Grove, Indiana, Police Officer Brian Elliott, 33, a two-year department veteran and former Marion County Sheriff’s deputy, was fatally shot on February 16, 2026, while responding to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment.
For context, he and another officer were fired upon by suspect Kenneth Terrell Johnson after attempting to enter responding to cries for help. In the attack, both were wounded and eventually hospitalized. Elliott succumbed to injuries despite the best efforts of the physicians, while the second officer was successfully stabilized.
Eventually, the suspect was taken into custody. Officer Elliott, a Beech Grove native, leaves behind his grieving wife Erin and parents. In response to the tragic murder, the community has planned tributes and memorials to the fallen officer who had died defending his community.
Explaining the situation, Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice stated, “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that today, we lost one of our very own,” adding, “Officer Elliott, along with two other Beech Grove Police Department officers, was dispatched at 6:08 p.m. to the 100 block of Diplomat Court for a disturbance.”
Building on this point, he added, “After they arrived, Officer Elliott and another officer were shot. Both officers were rushed to Eskenazi Hospital, but despite the best lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Officer Elliott succumbed to his injuries.”
“The other officer, who we are not naming at this time, is currently in stable condition and is expected to survive,” he noted. Continuing, he then added, commenting on the human toll of this, “My heart goes out to Brian’s wife, Erin, his parents, and all of his family, friends, and loved ones.”
Concluding his comments, he thanked the hospital staff and declared, “At this time, I am asking that we lean on one another to get through this. We are grateful to the team at Eskenazi Hospital, and our law enforcement and community partners for their extraordinary response and support.”

Similarly, the Chicago Police Department reacted, “The Chicago Police Department extends our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Beech Grove (Indiana) Police Officer Brian Elliott, who was killed in the line of duty on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026.”
Responding to the situation, California Republcian Mike Netter noted, “Officer Brian Elliott was killed February 12th, and another officer was injured after a suspect fired at them during a domestic disturbance call in Beech Grove, Indiana.”
Offering more context, he explained, “Officer Elliott was 33 years old. His survivors include his wife Erin, who he married in 2023. He loved their dog Ellie, enjoyed playing bass guitar, and was a devoted fan of the Indianapolis Colts. In other words, he was a human being who went to work yesterday just like the rest of us, but he never got to come home.”
“Prior to joining his hometown Beech Grove Police Department, he served with distinction as a sheriff’s deputy, and had graduated with honors for top academic achievement from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy,” Netter stated. Rounding out his comments with a personal message, the courageous California Republican sadly concluded, “Sending sincere condolences to the Elliott family and all who are grieving another senseless loss in the line of duty.”
