An immigrant truck driver originally hailing from India has pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving that led to a violent crash that ended the life of former Canadian Olympic figure skater, Alexandra Paul. The accident occurred in Melancthon Township, located north of Shelburne, Ontario, three years ago. Court staff in Orangeville, Ontario, confirmed that Sukhwinder Sidhu pleaded guilty on February 10, 2026.

The horrific accident that ended the life of the Olympic skater, who was only 23-years-old, took place in August 2023, when law enforcement officials say that a transport truck entered a construction zone and smashed into a line of stopped cars. A total of seven vehicles were involved in the incident. Paul competed as an ice dancer along with her partner and future husband, Mitchell Islam, before retiring from the sport in 2016.

Islam and Paul won several international medals, three Canadian Championship medals, and competed at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Sidhu admitted to charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm just before his trial was about to begin.

Sidhu accepted personal responsibility for the tragic crash, which also left Paul’s 10-month-old son with multiple injuries. According to News18, Sidhu was operating the truck at double the posted speed limit in a construction zone when he crashed into a line of six vehicles.

Prosecutors informed the court that several warning signs were posted in the area, all of which Sidhu ignored. Paul’s vehicle was struck so hard that it was pushed into a ditch. She was killed immediately. Her infant son, strapped in the backseat, suffered a broken leg.

Three other men in other vehicles suffered what prosecutors called life-altering injuries. Details presented to the court revealed that Sidhu had been working for 26 hours straight at the time of the accident. Sidhu is scheduled to be sentenced in mid-May. Victim impact statements from members of Paul’s family will be heard during the hearing.

A rash of truck driving accidents has also happened in the United States involving illegal aliens, including one that killed four innocent people. According to a notice from the Department of Homeland Security, ICE arrested Bekzhan Beishekeev, 30, from Kyrgyzstan, who entered the country illegally under the Biden administration.

The notice stated that Beishekeev swerved into oncoming traffic and smashed into a van in a head-on collision. The suspect received a commercial driver’s license from the state of Pennsylvania. Beishekeev was traveling eastbound on Indiana’s State Route 67 when he failed to brake for a slowed semi-truck ahead of him. Law enforcement officers say he then swerved to avoid colliding with the truck, but crashed into a van that was carrying 15 passengers.

Four of the passengers died as a result of the crash. The incident is still being investigated by Indiana State Police, according to the Jay County Sheriff’s Department and the Jay County Coroner’s Office. ICE put out an immigration detainer against Beishekeev with the Jay County Jail on February 4. Thanks to Indiana cooperating with immigration enforcement officers, they were able to arrest Beishekeev the following morning.

“Not only was Bekzhan Beishekeev released into our country by the Biden administration using the CBP One app, but he was also given a commercial driver’s license by Governor Shapiro’s Pennsylvania. These decisions have had deadly consequences and led to the death of four innocent people in Indiana on Tuesday,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin went on to say in a statement.

“It is incredibly dangerous for illegal aliens, who often don’t know our traffic laws or even English, to be operating semi-trucks on America’s roads. These sanctuary governor’s must stop giving illegal aliens commercial driver’s licenses before another American gets killed.”
