The text of the Schumer-Lankford Border Deal was recently released and many on the right reacted quite strongly against it, arguing that it is a terrible deal that will do nothing to staunch the flow of illegal immigrants across the border and much to make such illegal immigration more frequent. Among those who sounded off on it was Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
She did so in a statement released by her office in which she ripped into the Biden Administration for the border crisis and argued that there is much more that needs to be done to secure the border, thus making any bill that would open the border up yet more an even worse idea. She pointed to the numbers of illegal immigrants and potentially trafficked children as support for her perspective.
Beginning the statement, Sen. Blackburn blamed Biden for the crisis and argued that we need to remember that illegal immigration is illegal, saying, “It is against the law for an individual to illegally cross into our country — it’s incredible that still needs to be said. We are a nation of law and order, yet the Biden administration has allowed over 8.8 million illegal immigrants to flood our border.”
Continuing, she then spoke up about the tens of thousands of children who have likely been trafficked across the border, noting that nearly 90,000 kids have gone missing. She said, “Meanwhile, at least 85,000 migrant children have gone missing under the watch of Biden’s HHS as cartels and unvetted sponsors take advantage of them.”
That’s when she vowed her firm hostility to the bill and its provisions, characterizing the deal as one which would “make illegal immigration legal.” Sen. Blackburn said, “That is unacceptable, and allowing even one immigrant to enter our country illegally is unacceptable. I will never vote to make illegal immigration legal, and I will not support this deal.”
She then added that there is a bill the House has already passed that would solve the border situation: HR 2. Calling on Senate Democrats to pass it, she said, “If my Democratic colleagues are serious about working with us to secure the border, they should call for a vote on the Secure the Border Act (H.R.2), which arrived in the Senate on May 15 and has languished without even a hearing.”
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has also called on his Senate colleagues to pass HR 2. He said, “Nine months have now passed since we sent our Secure the Border Act (HR 2) to the Senate. As we have explained repeatedly, that bill contains the core legislative reforms that are necessary to actually compel the Biden administration to resolve the border catastrophe.”
Further, in a tweet about the Biden Administration’s handling of the border situation, Speaker Johnson ripped into Kamala, posting, “When asked about solutions to the border catastrophe, Vice President Harris recommended that Congress grant mass amnesty and spend taxpayer dollars to process – not stop – more illegals. This answer from President Biden’s ‘border [chief]’ is exactly why the administration can’t be trusted to solve the catastrophe they, themselves, created.”
Even Sen. Manchin, a Democrat, has called on his party to fix the border situation. Watch him here:
