Recently, Texas Pastor Thomas Wilson survived a harrowing incident in which he was shot twice and robbed after refusing to lend his phone to a gunman. Reportedly, the shooter told the Meadowbrook Baptist Church faith leader, “God is not going to bless you tonight.”
The encounter happened last Wednesday as the 61-year-old pastor was leaving the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo alongside his secretary. He claims he was then approached and asked by an individual if they could borrow Wilson’s phone.
Upon refusing this request, he was cursed by the individual. “I told him no, and he kept going on and he even said these words, ‘God is not going to bless you tonight,’” Wilson recounted. The pastor then began to walk away from the man when he realized his car had been burglarized.
According to Wilson, the man who had just asked to borrow his phone returned and demanded that the pastor hand over his bag. “At first I was going to give it all, just give it up, but then he pulls the gun and it’s pointing right here in my face, and I saw this guy has no intentions of letting me walk away from here,” Wilson said.
Wilson further described the tense situation, noting that he felt compelled to take defensive action against the criminal, who he believed was about to shoot both him and his secretary. “As agitated as he had become, he was going to not only shoot me but also my secretary and I couldn’t let that happen,” he added. “I reached and grabbed at the gun and tried to get it away from my face and it went off, hitting me in my shoulder.”
A struggle ensued, where both Wilson and the gunman wrestled to the ground. Amid the fight, Wilson ended up sustaining gunshots to both of his shoulders before the man escaped with his bag containing valuables. However, the individual left behind a shoe, a cell phone, and other items, which the Houston Police are collecting as evidence.
Wilson stated that while he is open to extending his forgiveness to the gunman, he maintains that he must be caught to protect the lives of other innocent people. The pastor called for the criminal to be brought to justice, where he can be held accountable for his actions. “I want this man caught; I want to protect others,” the pastor said. “He still has to take responsibility for what he has done, but in the midst of that, we still have to have a forgiving heart,” Wilson said. Wilson further expressed his gratitude to God for allowing him to walk away from the ordeal able to see another day. “I thank God that I’m still here today, ” he said, stating how his faith has only grown stronger following shooting. “To Him be glory, I’ve not had any real pain since the shooting.”
