Things got electric during the introductory Senate confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth, the Army combat veteran and former Fox News News channel host who President-elect Donald Trump has picked to be Secretary of Defense, on Tuesday, January 14, when Sen. Markwayne Mullin dropped some serious accusations on his fellow senators.
As background, much of the hearing centered around Democratic Senators hurling accusations at Pete Hegseth that the media had promoted using anonymous sources. Those accusations included, amongst other things, claims that Mr. Hegseth has, in the past, habitually had a bit too much to drink and was something of a womanizer. He has denied most of the claims hurled against him.
Those claims hurled against Hegseth not only included various smears and ridiculous claims, such as Sen. Liz Warren misunderstanding what rank in the military Hegseth obtained, but also various moments breaching all bounds of decorum, such as repeated shouting and one senator even smacking the table in front of her while angrily yelling at him.
In any case, commenting on the utter hypocrisy of those Democratic Senators, Sen. Markwayne Mullin noted that many of them have shown up drunk to vote, saying, “How many senators showed up drunk to vote at night? Don’t tell me you haven’t seen it because I know you have!” Continuing, he sounded off on their infidelity, saying, “How many senators have gotten a divorce because they’ve cheated on their wives?” He added that the attacks on Hegseth were a “big show.”
Continuing, after noting what the requirements for a Secretary of Defense are, he slammed many of his fellow senators as being utterly incompetent, saying, “There are a lot of senators I wouldn’t have on my board because there are no qualifications except your age and you gotta be living in the state — and you’re a citizen of the United States — to be a senator. Other than the fact we gotta convince a lot of people to vote for us.”
Further, praising Mr. Hegseth’s character, Sen. Mullin said, “He’s been willing to see friends die for this country. His wife is willing to still stand beside him knowing he wasn’t perfect, knowing that all this was going to be brought up, and he’s still willing to serve the country. What other qualifications does he need?”
Commenting on the clip in an excellent post on Facebook, Breitbart News said, “Hypocrites and vipers! Republican Senator Markwayne Mullen of Oklahoma unloaded on Democrat senators on Monday for trying to tank Pete Hegseth’s appointment as Secretary of Defense by feigning outrage at some of Hegseth’s personal mistakes, noting that the United States Senate is known for members showing up “drunk” to work and cheating on their spouses.” Watch the senator here:
Also commenting on the matter, Tim Pool wrote, in a post on X slamming the call out of Democratic hypocrisy, “HAHA Holy Mother of Epic. Senator Mullin Roasting Democrats because Other Senators SHOW UP DRUNK TO VOTE And Never get called out or insulted the way they are trying to do to Pete Hegseth.”
