Famous actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson’s Los Angeles home was reportedly broken into and burglarized recently. The news would make the couple the latest victims of celebrity burglary victims, where the deteriorating crime conditions in Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s California have not spared its wealthy and elite.
Reports indicate that several weeks ago, the 68-year-old “Forrest Gump” actor’s guest house was broken into during the middle of the day when the burglars smashed glass to obtain entry. Despite the breaking of the glass setting of a security alarm, the thieves were not deterred. Fortunately, both Hanks and his wife were not home when the incident occurred. Furthermore, the criminals only opted to break into the guest house, avoiding the main home on the property.
Last month NBC Los Angeles reported on the rise in burglaries the City of Angels is observing. According to Los Angeles POlice Chief Chief Dominic Choi, the city has seen a 4% spike in the criminal activity, where thieves are targeting residential properties in stead of businesses and commercial real estate. As of March, it was reported that L.A. had seen over 900 residential burglaries since the beginning of the year.
Moreover, it appears that burglars are employing new strategies, making rapid hits and spending less time inside buildings. “These are happening very quickly,” Choi explained to the Board of Police Commissioners. We’re not seeing the entire house being ransacked,” he added. These individuals that are conducting these high-end burglaries know what they’re looking for, and they’re in and out in a few minutes.”
Furthermore, criminals are also devising creative tactics to subvert security systems. “Burglars are going up to the panels and just turning the power off, then all their systems are down,” the chief said. In some cases, they will jam security cameras connected to WiFi so as not to be captured on video in their criminal acts. “If you put a lock on there, that will help deter that activity, we know there’s WiFi jammers being used, so if cameras are on WiFi, they’re being jammed and not being recorded.”
The American Tribune recently reported on repeated criminal incidents victimizing famous actress Goldie Hawn. Earlier this year, the 78-year-old actress spoke about the pervasive crime in Los Angeles, where she has been the victim of multiple home break-ins. As a result, Hawn is considering moving out of her hometown as it no longer feels safe.
“What if we couldn’t live in LA, where would we live? We both decided, I think it’s Palm Desert. … It’s so safe.” She added, broaching the subject of the robbery she and Russell experienced while out to dinner, “It’s just ’cause L.A. is terrible. I mean, we were robbed once,” she said. Recounting a burglary, she said, “We came back and went in the house. I went up to the stairs and I walked into my closet. I just lost it. They had broken in from the balcony to our bedroom, our closets.”
