In the aftermath of President-elect Donald Trump’s major victory in the 2024 presidential election, reports indicate there has been a substantial uptick in internet searches for “how to move to Canada” in blue states as the rest of the nation rejected their ideals. As Trump decisively took the popular vote and the electoral college, coupled with a flipping of the Senate and what appears to be a majority in the House, many are seemingly considering leaving the country altogether in search of more liberal governance.
Reportedly, the number of Google searches for advice on how to relocate to Canada increased by 400 percent day-over-day after the election in blue states such as Vermont, Maine, Oregon, and New Hampshire. Notably, Minnesota, Tim Walz’s home state, came in fifth place on that list. The Google searches mirrored the reaction to Trump’s 2016 victory where many celebrities maintained they would leave the U.S.
The American Tribune has reported on the outrage from liberal celebrities as Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris. “This is why some of y’all states be getting hurricanes,” rapper Cardi B said. “I hate y’all bad,” she added. Cardi B also responded to someone asking if she’d appear at Trump’s inauguration, stating, “I’m sick of you! Burn your f***ing hats, motherf***er. I’m really sad. I swear to God I’m really sad.”
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis said, “Gay and trans people will be more afraid…We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve. For all those people there will be those who will help you. Me included.”
Actor John Cusack claimed, “The fact that the country would choose to destroy itself by voting in a convicted felon rapist and Nazi is a sign of deep nihilism. To put it mildly.” Actress Christina Applegate claimed her daughter was “sobbing” over the impending loss of “rights” under Trump. “My child is sobbing because her rights as a woman may be taken away,” she wrote. “Why? And if you disagree, please unfollow me,” she stated.
Host of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart on air claimed during election night, “My point is this: f***! … But this isn’t the end, I promise you. This is not the end. And we have to regroup, and we have to continue to fight and continue to work day in and day out to create a better society — for our children, for this world, for this country, that we know is possible. It’s possible.”
The Tribune also reported on the reaction from President Barrack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. “Over the last few weeks and through Election Day, millions of Americans cast their votes – not just for president, but for leaders at every level. Now the results are in, and we want to congratulate President Trump and Senator Vance on their victory,” they said in a statement.
The Obamas continued, “This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on a whole host of issues. But living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out, and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power.”
