The situation at the US border with Mexico, as any video of it will obviously attest, is…not good. Thousands upon thousands of illegal immigrants are flowing across every day as an overwhelmed Border Patrol struggles to deal with what many are calling an invasion.
Yet worse, the border crisis could soon grow even more problematic, as the New York Post recently pointed out in an article arguing that the suspension of Title 42 would turn a chaotic situation into an utter disaster. In that outlet’s words:
Think the border was out of control before? Just wait a short eight days, after which the Biden administration must stop deporting people under the Title 42 COVID health-emergency measure. An estimated 47,000 are waiting to get in, and thousands more will follow.
The sheer numbers threaten to overwhelm El Paso and other border towns. Expect more buses to arrive at Port Authority.
Most of the media will describe this rush as “asylum seekers” and it may be strictly true that they say they mean to ask for asylum. But economic opportunity cannot be the basis for an asylum claim. Most of the people crossing should not qualify for it, but Biden lets them in anyway.
Republicans are laying much of the blame for the crisis at the feet of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who a number of House Republicans led by Rep. Any Biggs are now considering trying to impeach.
Rep. Biggs, speaking on the issue, said “Secretary Mayorkas has released more than 1 million illegal aliens into the country. Most of these released illegal aliens will never be heard from again.”
And though Rep. Biggs is the one leading the charge, he’s far from the only one ripping into Mayorkas. Reps. Boebert and Flores did as well, with Rep. Boebert saying “He regularly lies to the American people, claiming that the southern border is closed. I’ve been there. It’s wide open” and Rep. Flores saying “House Judiciary Republicans have summoned Mayorkas for border investigation. Nothing short of an impeachment and removal proceedings should be the outcome.”
But while party firebrands are interested in holding Mayorkas into account via impeachment, the “moderates” are gumming up the works, as is usual. Fox News Digital quotes one anonymous “centrist” as saying “A lot of us were upset at the way that House Democrats politicized the impeachment process during [former] President Donald Trump’s tenure. No one wants to see a president or Cabinet official impeached simply for holding different views than the party in control of the House.”
With the GOP holding only 222 seats and needing 218 for a majority, the stance of that “centrist” and others like him or her could end the impeachment process before it even begins, as an impeachment must pass with a majority in the Houe to make it to the Senate, where a 2/3 vote is needed.
Still, the effort could draw more, much-needed attention to the border as the crisis grows ever worse and it ever more open.
