The House Ethics Committee has opened an investigation into Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) over allegations of sexual misconduct, after he was accused of kissing a much younger aide who worked for a different member of Congress, in June 2026. The situation was first reported on in April. The committee made the formal announcement about the investigation on August 17, 2026.
“The Committee, pursuant to Committee Rule 18(a), is reviewing allegations that Representative Jimmy Gomez may have engaged in sexual misconduct in violation of the Code of Official Conduct or any other applicable standard of conduct, including engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer in violation of clause 18(b) of the Code,” the committee went on to say in their announcement.
A report from CNN revealed that the committee had started investigating Gomez in June, doing so behind-the-scenes with as little fanfare as possible. Gomez himself has admitted he made mistakes that have caused his family pain, but said his actions were not in violation of the law or House rules. When the Daily Caller reached out to Gomez’s office for a comment on the investigation, there was no immediate response.
According to the report, the California Democrat stated he would cooperate with the Ethics Committee investigation. “Years ago, I made personal mistakes outside my marriage that have caused real pain to my wife and family,” Gomez stated in June. “Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most.”
A spokesperson representing Gomez responded to the reporting about the incident in April, denying all of the allegations brought against the congressman. Gomez is not the first member of Congress this year to have sexual misconduct allegations brought against him. Former Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Tony Gonzales (R-TX) stepped down from their seats after similar accusations were brought against them.
Gonzales confessed to having an affair with an aide who later committed suicide by lighting herself on fire in September 2025. Swalwell resigned after several women came out and accused him of sexual assault, harassment, and sending unsolicited nude images. All of this happened while he was running for governor of California, obliterating any chance he had at becoming the party nominee for the position.
Along with those allegations, new files have been released that provide a detailed look into Swalwell’s intimate physical relationship with Fang Fang, a spy for the Chinese Communist Party. This connection opened up opportunities for Fang to get involved with his campaign and even hire individuals to work on it alongside her.

Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) decided to drop his bid for reelection on August 5, 2026, after the Ethics Committee concluded an investigation and found that he engaged in inappropriate behavior with two of his former female staffers. The committee has also opened an investigation into Rep. Max Miller (R-OH), which he himself requested, after his former wife, Emily Moreno, accused him of domestic abuse.
