Rep. Jared Moskowitz recently posted a controversial tweet depicting President Joe Biden reacting to the figure of famous actress Sidney Sweeney. Shortly after sharing the raunchy meme with his following on X, the Florida Democrat swiftly deleted the post.
Congressional reporter for Politico, Daniella Diaz, called out Rep. Moskowitz, uploading a screenshot of the original tweet. Moskowitz responded directly to Diaz’s post in the comments section, explaining, “It was inappropriate. I took it down.”
Many social media users have reprimanded the House Democrat for the short-lived meme. “Why would you ever think it was appropriate in the first place? If I posted something like this to my professional public facing account? I would lose my job… but I get it… politicians do what you want,” one person responded to the representative, questioning his conduct.
However, some social media users appeared to be more understanding of the Congressman’s post, asserting that it was just a lighthearted joke. “It was funny and a little inappropriate. He even owned up to it. The replies of it being a disgrace and for him to step down over it are so over the top. Just another thing to be outraged over I guess,” another person said.
Sweeney has risen to prominence in recent years through her roles in shows such as HBO’s Euphoria. However, the actress recently received significant critical acclaim after hosting Saturday Night Live while wearing a revealing dress that sent shockwaves through social media, where there have been countless memes featuring Sweeney’s cleavage in her low-cut attire.
Following her SNL appearance, a common sentiment that has spread among online conservative communities is that Sydney Sweeney has defeated the pervasive cultural influence from the left with her “anti-woke boobs.” Richard Hanania shared a suggestive clip of Sweeney with the caption “wokeness is dead,” which quickly went viral, giving origin to the meme.
Since then, Sweeney’s breasts have seemingly ignited a culture war on the internet, sparking commentary pertaining to aesthetics and beauty following the societal reaction to the Saturday Night Live segment. Spectator columnist Bridget Phetasy wrote about the cultural implications of Sweeney’s rise to fame.
“For anyone under the age of twenty-five, they’ve likely never seen it in their lifetime — as the giggling blonde with an amazing rack has been stamped out existence, a creature shamed to the brink of extinction,” Phetasy wrote.
The progressive left has criticized the response to Sweeney, citing a variety of woke moral causes. For example, writer Ali Barthwell labeled Phetasy’s analysis “fatphobia, misogyny, anti-blackness, transphobia just rolled into one.” She added, “These weird conservatives are lifting up sydney sweeney for being a thin cis white blonde with big boobs because they are mad other body types have also been on tv.”
Outside of the squabbling between the left and right over Sweeney, there are those who assert that such a matter should remain apolitical. “How are Sydney Sweeney’s boobs political? Is this really where we are? She’s hot, she’s got great boobs…turning this into a left/right thing is stupid. They’re both perfect,” X user MimoFraz wrote.
