Yet more evidence was presented for why living in Los Angeles, California is a bad idea when, on Friday, May 26th at around 8 am, a man stumbled across a horrible scene: a homeless woman was screaming racial slurs while attacking a young girl who was walking to school. The homeless woman had, apparently, both struck the girl in the face and wrestled her to the ground when the man came across the scene.
The Good Samaritan, John Irias, rushed into action upon reaching and seeing the scene. As surveillance video of the incident shows, Irias rushes toward the young girl and homeless woman and attempts to push the woman off the girl. Not to be easily stopped, the woman slashed at Irias’ face with a box cutter.
She managed to slash him, but she did not manage to stop him, as he then managed to disarm her and hold her down until he police arrived to arrest her. The unharmed student was able to keep walking and make it to school.
Iraias, speaking to KTLA about the incident and why he rushed into action, said that he was parking his car and going about his business when “I saw the homeless person just passed me strike the little girl in the face.”
He added, speaking to Fox 11, that the attack appeared to have been racially motivated, as the woman was yelling about Hispanic people. He said, “She was shouting racial slurs. She was saying like, ‘I’m tired of you Hispanic people.’ So it was just a random attack, just a hateful crime.”
So, that’s when he ran into action and tried to help out, getting slashed across his face in the process. Describing the attack with the box cutter and when she used it, said, “That’s when I ran over to help. Along the way, the homeless person proceeded to take out a weapon and before I could find out what that was, I went for a takedown and I was slashed in the face.”
Continuing, he added that more people should fight back against the violent crime ravaging their cities rather than tamely let them prey on anyone and everyone around them. “There should be more people who should stand up to criminals,” he said.
Irias also said, KTLA reports, that he rushed into action so quickly and unhesitatingly because he thought of his own little girl being attacked when he saw the homeless woman playing on the young schoolgirl here.
Victor Camarena, a friend of Irias, was across the street at the time Irias jumped into action. He ran to help his friend when he saw what was happening and had to be the one to tell Irias that the slash was pretty bad, as his face was “gushing blood.” Speaking about that and saying that Irias already had the homeless woman restrained on the floor when he arrived, Camarena said, “By that time, John already has the suspect on the floor. He’s gushing blood from the side of his face, asking me if it’s bad. I’m like, ‘It’s pretty bad bro.’”
Camarena also said that the day’s events were fortuitous, as everything ended up happening at just the right time to allow Irias to rush into action and save the little girl from the raving homeless woman. As Camarena put it: “If everything hadn’t played out the way that it did that morning, from him being late to my house, from me not being able to find my car keys, God only knows what could have happened to that little girl. He’s a hero.”
