Speaking in late August of this year about Minnesota Governor and Kamala’s 2024 running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, Senator and 2024 Trump running mate JD Vance joked that Gov. Walz, known for his less-than-true statements about things like a Chamber of Commerce award and his military service, would soon be saying that he is the one who was almost assassinated in Butler, PA.
Sen. Vance’s comments, sparked by report after report of Walz being caught making untrue statements about his past, also had to do with an attempted fact-check of a joke he made by CNN reporter Alayna Treene. The comments occurred during a rally in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the speech mainly revolved around Walz’s military service lies.
During a prior speech, Sen. Vance joked about the sorry state of Chicago, which frequently sees double-digit shootings over weekends, and about Walz’s false claim that he carried an AR-pattern weapon in a combat zone, something that didn’t happen but which he made up in an attempt to push gun control.
Sen. Vance, making his joke about Gov. Walz and Chicago, said, “My little theory about why they decided to have the convention in Chicago is, you know, Tim Walz has been going around saying that he served in war, and maybe they did it in Chicago, so that he could actually accurately say that he visited a combat zone.”
t was that claim that Treene tried fact-checking, saying,”Vance in WI says his ‘little theory’ about why Democrats chose to host their convention in Chicago is ‘so that [Walz] could actually, accurately say that he went, he visited a combat zone.’ Democrats selected Chicago in April 2023 — long before Biden even considered dropping out.”
Then, shortly afterward, Sen. Vance spoke at a rally in North Carolina and obliquely mocked Treene by making another joke about Walz and his military service, saying, “What won’t ‘Stolen Valor’ Tim Walz fib about? In fact, I believe in his next speech he’s probably going to say he survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. I think that’s what Tim Walz is going to claim next time.”

In another incident, Sen. Vance had quite the comment to make based on Gov. Walz’s many and varied lies, such as an incident involving the Chamber of Commerce, when a reporter asked him about the upcoming debate between him and Walz, asking, “How are you preparing for a debate with Tim Walz?”
Replying, Sen. Vance jokes that he has a friend who knows how to “embellish” a story and that he’s pretending to debate that liar to prepare for dealing with Walz. He said, “Well, I found a good friend from back home who embellishes and lies a lot, and I’m having him stand in for Tim Walz. That’s what we’re doing during our debate.”
