Oscar-nominee for best actress Karla Sofía Gascón recently criticized President Donald Trump’s executive order that the United States government would only recognize two sexes, male and female, in accordance with biology. Gascon slammed the president, arguing that he is “shameless” for the move to combat woke gender ideology.
Last week, Gascón was nominated for the 2025 Oscars for best actress, the first transgender individual to receive the nomination. Gascón has been recognized for starring in Emilia Pérez, a movie about a Mexican cartel leader who seeks to change genders and help victims of gang violence. As Trump has stepped back into office, Gascon has become increasingly outspoken about transgenderism.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón said, “He is shameless. I hope that whatever needs to happen happens to shut everyone up, on both sides.” While onstage during the Golden Globes earlier this month, the Emilia Perez star shared a message claiming, “The light always wins over darkness.” Gascón said, “You come and maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up [but] you never can take away our soul, our existence, our identity.”
“We are going backwards,” Gascón told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview from last month. “The new generations have not experienced what the previous ones have experienced, so they are destined to repeat the same mistakes. Be careful with giving power to the intolerant, because it will end the little tolerance we have.” Gascón further noted, “I would also like to send a message of hope to all those people who suffer hatred: They will never be able to take away our pride in our existence, they will never bring me down, I will continue to fight for a more just humanity.”
President Donald Trump’s January 20 executive order, titled, DEFENDING WOMEN FROM GENDER IDEOLOGY EXTREMISM AND RESTORING BIOLOGICAL TRUTH TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT,” outlined how the government will scale back the gender ideology that progressives have pushed over the past few years.
Section one of the order states, “Across the country, ideologues who deny the biological reality of sex have increasingly used legal and other socially coercive means to permit men to self-identify as women and gain access to intimate single-sex spaces and activities designed for women, from women’s domestic abuse shelters to women’s workplace showers. This is wrong. Efforts to eradicate the biological reality of sex fundamentally attack women by depriving them of their dignity, safety, and well-being. The erasure of sex in language and policy has a corrosive impact not just on women but on the validity of the entire American system. Basing Federal policy on truth is critical to scientific inquiry, public safety, morale, and trust in government itself.”
“It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality. Under my direction, the Executive Branch will enforce all sex-protective laws to promote this reality, and the following definitions shall govern all Executive interpretation of and application of Federal law and administration policy,” the order continued, before outlining policy guidance.
