Former President Donald Trump took some time out of his busy campaign schedule to address auto Robert De Niro after the star of “Killers of the Flower Moon” attempted, unsuccessfully, to deliver an anti-trump speech at the Gotham Awards in New York City. Trump logged into his Truth social account to take aim at the Hollywood star who picked a fight with one of the best debaters of all time.
Speaking in front of a packed house in New York at the Gotham Awards, De Niro became flustered as he realized that part of his script was missing. He claimed that someone had come through without his knowledge and edited out a portion of the speech that was dedicated to sharing his negative thoughts about Donald Trump in the lead-up to the 2024 campaign season.
Trump, turning to Truth Social, blasted De Niro for his reliance on a teleprompter, something that Trump has famously avoided becoming reliant on in his boisterous speeches. Trump wrote, “Robert De Niro, whose acting talents have greatly diminished, with his reputation now shot, must even use a teleprompter for his foul and disgusting language, so disrespectful to our Country.”
An angered trump continued, “He has become unwatchable both in movies, and with the FOOLS that destroyed the Academy Awards, bringing them from one of the top shows in the Country to a Low Rated afterthought. De Niro should focus on his life, which is a mess, rather than the lives of others. He has become a total loser, as the World watches, waits, and laughs!”
Trump honed in on the horrible decline that award shows such as the Academy Awards have seen in recent years, as it seems that fewer Americans than ever are interested in the self-aggrandizing Hollywood parties. De Niro may very well have worked his way into the regular rotation of stars that Trump users to drive his point home about the growing scene of social justice in America.
De Niro, for his part, stuck to his guns on stage at the Gotham Awards. Despite the unannounced change to his script, the Hollywood actor did indeed deliver the anti-Trump portion of the speech from memory, saying, in part, “Lying has become just another tool in the charlatan’s arsenal. The former President lied to us more than 30,000 times during his four years in office.”
De Niro continued, moving to what he must have considered to be the most hard hitting line of the ramble, saying, “And he’s keeping up the pace in his current campaign of retribution. But with all his lies, he can’t hide his soul. He attacks the weak, destroys the gifts of nature and shows disrespect, for example, by using ‘Pocahontas’ as a slur.”
According to a Variety report, this experience soured Robert De Niro from the organizers of the event and even caused him to speak out briefly against them, an unthinkable act for most in Hollywood. He said, “I don’t feel like thanking them at all for what they did. How dare they do that, actually.”
