Fox News host Greg Gutfeld is mourning the brutal murder of a longtime supporter who became a personal friend to several members of the network’s late-night lineup. Andrew James Wimsatt, a 62-year-old engineer from Austin, was stabbed to death from behind while sitting on a park bench in Round Rock, Texas. Authorities have described the September 7th attack as random and said Wimsatt didn’t know the man accused of killing him.
Wimsatt had reportedly visited his elderly mother at a nearby nursing home shortly before stopping at Chandler Creek Park on Labor Day. Surveillance footage showed him sitting on the bench at approximately 10:55 a.m. A woman discovered him on the ground with significant injuries approximately 20 minutes later and called 911, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to an arrest affidavit, a man carrying a knife approached Wimsatt from behind only minutes after he sat down. The attacker allegedly wrapped one arm around Wimsatt and repeatedly stabbed him in the neck as the victim attempted to fight him off. Investigators said the assailant continued the attack after Wimsatt fell before wiping the blade on his clothing and fleeing toward a nearby pool area.
As Fox News reported, Williamson County deputies arrested 26-year-old Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu and charged him with murder and theft. Investigators used surveillance recordings from the park, surrounding homes, and a nearby McDonald’s to trace the suspect’s movements. A search of his residence allegedly uncovered clothing matching that worn by the attacker and a 5.5-inch knife that tested presumptively positive for blood.
Gutfeld struggled to comprehend the killing of a man he remembered as unusually kind and helpful. “The crime, to me, is so heinous and shocking that I’m still trying to comprehend it,” he told Fox News Digital. “I may never.” Gutfeld said his initial skepticism toward Wimsatt disappeared as he realized that the fan’s generosity came without an ulterior motive.
“At first, I was suspicious, because I always assume people do things because they want things,” Gutfeld explained. “I was wrong with Andrew. He did stuff for people — lots of people — because he enjoyed being of service, and promoting stuff that he genuinely enjoys and believes in.” In another tribute, Gutfeld said Wimsatt may have been the only person on social media who never left a negative word beneath anyone’s post and consistently found positive ways to engage.

Fox News contributor Kat Timpf described Wimsatt as a “fan who became a friend” to both her and her family. Timpf said they had spoken at least once a week for years and had lunch together in Fort Worth in June after Wimsatt drove from Austin to attend her return to the stage. She remembered him sending television clips and offering encouragement whenever hostile online attention left her feeling discouraged.
Ogbodiegwu has not yet been convicted of Wimsatt’s murder. Fox News reported that he has a Williamson County criminal record dating to at least 2017 and was arrested twice earlier in 2026 on charges involving theft and carrying fake identification. He spent time in the county jail between January and April and was most recently released on June 9th. He is being held on a $1 million bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 8th.
