Grammy-Winning Rapper Begins 14-Year Prison Sentence for Illegally Funneling Foreign Money to the Obama Campaign

Grammy-winning rap artist Prakazrel “Pras” Michel of the once popular group The Fugees, has officially reported to federal prison where he will spend the next 14 years after being convicted of illegally funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. A spokesperson for Michel revealed that he reported to a low-security correctional institution in Arizona.

“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice. Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence,” Erica Dumas, a spokesperson for Michel, went on to say, adding that his legal team is still contesting the charges. “This chapter is difficult, but it is not his final one,” Dumas continued.

Michel, 53, was convicted on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, in 2023. He was sentenced in 2025. Prosecutors involved in the case say that the musician obtained over $120 million from Malaysian billionaire Low Taek Jho, who goes by the name Jho Low, and then guided the cash through straw donors to Obama’s campaign.

According to Breitbart News, Michel also attempted to end a Justice Department investigation into Low, tampered with two witnesses, and then perjured himself at trial. Low still maintains his innocence. Michel and childhood friends Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean founded The Fugees, who went on to win two Grammy Awards and sell tens of millions of albums.

Many of the comments stated that this is proof that Obama cheated his way into the White House in 2012 and noted that this is a prime example of actual foreign interference in the U.S. election process, unlike the Russian collusion hoax brought against President Donald Trump during his first presidential campaign. “REAL foreign interference. Not a few Russian Facebook ads that they claim helped President Trump,” one user wrote.

Another individual pointed out how skewed the justice system is by slapping Michel with a 14-year sentence, but giving criminal illegals who kill people in drunk driving accidents a slap on the wrist. “14 years for this and an illegal kills a young woman while driving drunk and gets 2 years. I can’t make sense of it,” the user said.

In response to that comment, someone else said, “One is a federal crime and the other is a state or local crime. Depending on where the young woman was killed, you may have tough prosecutors and judges who believe in law and order; or, you may have Democratic prosecutors and judges in a place that has lax laws with artificially low prison terms and doesn’t even have bail for most charges.”

Another individual explained that Michel is getting off easy by being sent to a low-security prison, saying, “It’s minimum security federal prison, they don’t even have any locks on the building doors or fences. I’m not kidding, they even let other inmates drive other inmates to medical appointments and surgeries with no guards. It’s not prison, it’s summer camp with free food, cable TV, Xbox, Playstation, laptops, internet access, and door dash.”
