Rep. Mark Green recently outlined conservative grievances against Department of Homeland (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a Fox News opinion piece. According to the Republican congressman, the House Homeland Security Committee has gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with impeachment.
In his article, Green cited statistics on the unfettered inflow of migrants into the United States, where Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have documented millions of encounters at the southern border. Moreover, there have been nearly 2 million cases of known “gotaways” that have slipped into communities across the American interior.
The Tennessee representative claimed that the ongoing crisis of illegal immigration through the U.S. southern border was “intentionally caused” by Mayorkas, necessitating his impeachment in Congress. Green wrote:
“For three years, an unprecedented and wholly avoidable crisis has unfolded at our borders, a crisis that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has intentionally caused. There is no longer any question that articles of impeachment must be considered.”
Green further addressed the evidence Republicans have compiled against Mayorkas, explaining the Homeland Security secretary’s role in the ensuing crisis plaguing the United States. The representative charged Green with failing to enforce the laws of the United States while misleading the general public. He said:
“The evidence for this is compelling. As laid out extensively in the House Committee on Homeland Security’s investigative reports published throughout 2023, the historic crisis can be traced back to Secretary Mayorkas’ refusal to uphold the laws passed by Congress, his willful termination of extraordinarily effective border security policies despite being warned of the consequences, and his injection of operationally unsound policies in their place that blatantly defy the laws passed by Congress. Further, he has actively misled Congress and the American people about the causes and consequences of the crisis on multiple occasions since taking office.”
As Green points out, the rampant illegal immigration has had an undeniable impact on U.S. citizens, where fentanyl has perpetrated American streets, leading to record-high overdoses. Amid an administration that appears uninterested in taking meaningful action at the southern border, CBP is struggling to bear the burden of the crisis at hand. The congressman said:
“The human cost of the crisis is incalculable. Fentanyl flowing across the Southwest border is killing Americans in record numbers. The men and women of CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been overwhelmed, telling anyone who will listen—including the DHS Inspector General—that morale has tanked, and this secretary’s policies are responsible.”
Green continued criticizing Mayorkas in his opinion piece for his attitudes toward the brave men and women in CBP facing the brunt of the open borders firsthand. He illustrated the necessity for CBP to carry out arrests to mitigate the issue at the source before migrants pile into American cities. He stated:
“Even worse, the Secretary has publicly castigated our brave Border Patrol agents for “misconduct” that he knows never occurred. Record numbers of criminal aliens are being apprehended by the Border Patrol and presumably coming into our communities, as more bad actors seek to take advantage of these lax policies. Yet, at the same time, DHS arrests of criminal aliens have fallen dramatically.”
Rep. Green concludes that the House Homeland Security Committee should move forward with impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas for his disastrous leadership at the DHS. As illegal immigration continues at unsustainable rates, he maintains that Congress must do its job to uphold the laws of the nation.
