GOP Poised to Overtake Dems in Key Metric in Longtime Swing State

North Carolina, a longtime and key battleground state, is on the verge of Republican dominance, after the GOP surpassed Democrats in voter registration after decades in which Democrats led this metric. Ten years ago, Democrats led by nearly 750,000; as of mid-December 2025, the gap narrowed to about 1,200.

For context, Republicans attribute this to rejection of Democratic policies and effective GOP governance. Democrats highlighted rising unaffiliated voters and cynically blamed GOP agendas for economic woes. Nationally, Democrats lost millions in registrations from 2020-2024, while Republicans gained across the board.

Providing much-needed context, Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) explained the data. “Voters across North Carolina are rejecting the Democrats’ failed agenda and choosing Republican leadership,” … “This shift didn’t happen overnight, it’s the result of years of good common sense Republican governance and our focus on offering serious solutions on the issues that matter to the people,” he said.

Likewise, Former RNC chairman and North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley, added, “The reality is that bad Democrat policies coming out of Washington are driving voters away from the party here at home.”

Building on this point, he noted, “Insane policies supported by Roy Cooper and pushed by DC Democrats like Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris are completely out of step with North Carolinians.” He added, “Democrats couldn’t win Senate races here even when they had a cash advantage and a huge voter-registration edge.”

Building on that by making the left’s future and present situation in his state clear, he painted a grim picture. “Now they’ve lost that registration advantage too, and voters are making it clear they’re done with failed Democrat leadership,” Whatley declared.

Madison Andrus, DCCC regional spokesperson for North Carolina, issued a pathetic complaint. “Despite their repeated attempts at gerrymandering the state to subvert the will of the voters, Republicans have not managed to increase their share of registered voters in nearly four decades,” she whined.

Refusing to accept responsibility, the liberal added, “Now, with this latest scheme top of mind, voters across the state are souring on Republicans’ failing agenda that has led to higher grocery prices, more expensive health care, and greater difficulty making ends meet. Republicans have abandoned North Carolina’s working families and people are taking notice.”

Refuting these points, RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said, “Voters rejected Kamala Harris last year, and they’re continuing that trend as they turn away from the failed policies of Roy Cooper and Josh Stein,” describing the historic shift.

Explaining how important this election will be, Political analyst Chris Cooper noted, “It will be the race that drives people to the polls. Everyone who pays attention to politics knows that if the Democrats have any hope of getting the U.S. Senate back, they have to win the seat in North Carolina.”

Offering an alternative view, Amy Taylor, of the Cook Political Report, claimed, “The vulnerability of this seat, however, does not alter the overall Senate math for 2026. Even if Democrats were to win here in 2026, they’d still need to flip three more seats, including at least two in deep red states, in order to win a bare majority.”
