According to Sen. Steve Daines of Montana, the chairman of the very influential National Republican Senatorial Committee, which doles out much of the donation dollars to candidates, the 2024 presidential field needs to drop out and focus on propelling former President Donald Trump back into office.
Daines’ call comes alongside recent polling showing that Trump has a huge advantage over the competition, with even DeSantis now in the single digits of political support and fading fast while Trump shoots higher and higher in the polls. That polling also Trump beating Biden in important swing states.
In any case, Daines, who has endorsed Trump, said that former Vice President Mike Pence made the right decision in dropping out of the race and that others need to do the same thing so that the GOP can present a united front against Biden.
He said, speaking of Pence dropping out, “I was surprised, but I think that’s the right move.” He added, “Because it’s clear President Trump is going to be the nominee for Republicans for president, and the sooner we coalesce around him the better it’s going to be.”
Daines endorsed Trump during an April appearance on Donald Trump Jr.’s “Triggered” podcast, saying, “The best four years I’ve had in the U.S. Senate is when President Trump was serving in the Oval Office.” Daines also touted the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as “one of the greatest tax cuts in American history.”
Daines added, “Joe Biden has empowered and emboldened our adversaries by his weakness. He just shivers under his desk during the day. For these reasons and many others, I’m proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president of the United States.”
Daines wasn’t the only one to note that Trump’s massive base of support make him look like the winning pick. Matt Brookes, the Republican Jewish Coalition’s CEO, told POLITICO, “People judge him for what he does.” He added, “He’s got an incredible reservoir of goodwill in the Jewish community. He’s the frontrunner in a multicandidate field, and there are people supporting the other candidates as well. … But there’s no question, you saw by the response today, the strength of his support.”
Trump, for his part, has kept up the heat on his enemies within the GOP. Slamming Bill Barr in a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “I called Bill Barr Dumb, Weak, Slow Moving, Lethargic, Gutless, and Lazy, a RINO WHO COULDN’T DO THE JOB. He just didn’t want to be Impeached, which the Radical Left Lunatics were preparing to do. I was tough on him in the White House, for good reason, so now this Moron says about me, to get even, “his verbal skills are limited.” Well, that’s one I haven’t heard before. Tell that to the biggest political crowds in the history of politics, by far. Bill Barr is a LOSER!”
And, in a post on the falling popularity of the Ron DeSantis campaign, Trump wrote that the once-popular Florida Governor is having trouble attracting crowds, saying, “No crowds for Ron DeSanctimonious. He’s like a wounded bird falling from the sky!“
