Republicans are celebrating after a pair of local victories in New Mexico and Florida, holding onto several seats and increasing margins as Democrats fight tooth-and-nail to win back ground during President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House, according to results from several preliminary races. The biggest headline came out of New Mexico.
According to the information, Paul Wymer is now on track to win the Rio Rancho mayoral race in a runoff. Wymer, a self-described Republican, is currently leading his challenger, Alexandria Piland, 63% to 37% respectively. That’s a significant jump from the split during the 2024 presidential race when Trump took the city by a slim margin, 51% to former Vice President Kamala Harris’ 49%.
Conservatives feel the shift rightward is evidence that the Republican message of lower taxes, public safety, and day-to-day governance is still connecting with everyday Americans, even in areas that were previously competitive. Wymer received support from a number of GOP organizations in New Mexico, including the endorsement of former Mayor Gregg Hull.
According to a report from Trending Politics News, Hull backed Wymer in late 2025, going on to say, “Paul Wymer has been a key partner in shaping Rio Rancho’s progress, and he’s well prepared to guide the city forward. I’m proud to endorse him for Mayor of Rio Rancho.” Experts say that while most local races are, formally speaking, nonpartisan, they also serve as a temperature check.
The results of the Wymer-Piland race grabbed headlines because they go against the current pattern witnessed in other city and school-board contests, where Democratic-backed candidates have closed margins or even flipped seats since President Trump returned to the Oval Office. A mayoral race in Florida also got significant media attention.
Mayor Eric Diaz-Padron sailed to a stunning re-election victory over Yolanda Aguilar, with his 70% to her 29%. Several other Republicans, sitting commissioners Gustavo “Gus” Ceballos and Juan Blanes, along with commissioner-elect Victoria de la Torres, also took home big victories. President Trump completely owned West Miami in 2024, winning the area by 64.1% to Harris’ 34.1%.
Republicans weighing in on the Florida race stated that the conservative tilt in the city didn’t merely stick, but actually solidified. According to TPN, when you take the victories in both New Mexico and Florida together, it gives the GOP in those states a huge boost. New Mexico was almost a coin flip in 2024, but Wymer’s win shows it has clearly shifted right.

In Florida, in an area of the state Trump carried comfortably during his 2024 campaign, Republicans pulled off another massive win, proving that residents of the state resonate with the conservative message. A user on X was excited about the news of Wymer’s win, going on to respond to the news by saying, “Rio Rancho is marked safe from becoming Albuquerque!”
Another commenter said, “What makes Rio Rancho a great place to live, is Republican conservative policies, liberals screwed up Albuquerque and Santa Fe, don’t come here and do the same, stay in the mess you made.” A third individual replied to the news, saying, “Yes. At least Rio Rancho is staying red and refusing the pedo blue path.”
