Pop star Taylor Swift has endured a substantial decline in Spotify listeners following her controversial endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. According to recent reports, Swift has lost approximately 2 million listeners on the popular streaming platform since she voiced her support for Harris after last month’s presidential debate.
Before the September 10 debate between former President Donald and Harris, Swift reportedly had 94 million unique monthly listeners on Spotify. However, data as of September 27 indicates that the superstar had just under 92 million unique listeners. The decline in listeners could lead to a notable loss in revenue from Spotify, as the platform calculates earnings based on the number of streams an artist attains.
The American Tribune has covered other bad news for Taylor Swift related to her Democratic endorsement, where reports show a substantial decline in popularity. A recent poll conducted by J.L. Partners showed that 57% of Republicans view Swift negatively where 50% of Independents similarly hold an unfavorable view of the singer. Unsurprisingly, 71% of Democrats viewed Swift positively.
Co-founder of J.L. Partners, James Johnson, commented on the findings of the poll, stating, “It’s finally happened: Taylor Swift has turned from Miss Americana to The Archer in the political crossfire.” He added, “She is now viewed like many other things in American discourse, from the economy to news networks: through a partisan lens.”
“Though this one might not have had much of an impact immediately, if Swift is active in October in encouraging young people to vote, it could make a difference in swing states with tight margins. Harris certainly needs her help: our polling shows that 18-29 year olds heavily support Harris but are also some of the least enthusiastic about their vote in November. If that changes, Donald Trump is not Out of the Woods just yet,” Johnson further noted.
The controversial endorsement from Swift began, “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.”
Swift particularly noted her affinity for Tim Walz’s stance on the LGBT community, “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”
She concluded, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story. With love and hope, Taylor Swift Childless Cat Lady.”
