During a recent appearance on Hannity, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Hannity silenced Fox News Channel’s leftist host, Geraldo Rivera. That came when Rivera attempted to bully Rep. Gaetz into apologizing for the fiasco that was the repeated series of votes to get Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) elected to the Speaker of the House position when the new Congress began.
Pressing Rep. Gaetz on that, Rivera, attempting to pose as a tough guy and bully Gaetz, asked “What in the world were you and your 19 colleagues doing torturing the speaker, your speaker, your speaker-designate Kevin McCarthy? What was that for? What did you hope to attain in that?”
Rep. Gaetz hit back hard from the start with some sarcasm, saying “So, first of all, I’ve got some constituents in the military that could talk to you about real torture. I don’t think sitting through 15 votes quite qualifies.”
Continuing, Rep. Gaetz then explained what he and the others were fighting for when they refused to vote for McCarthy immediately, explaining that they wanted concessions that they thought would help them better represent and fight for their constituents.
Speaking on that, Rep. Gaetz said “We believe that instead of having omnibus spending legislation that comes to us with only a few hours to consider thousands of pages and then vote on something that funds every agency of the government all at once, that we should take individual votes on appropriations bills. That’s a concession we didn’t have when voting began. It’s one we earned by the time it ended.”
Continuing, he went on to add “We also believe that when bills are considered, they should comport to a single subject so I don’t have to do what I’ve had to do in the past, and vote on the farm bill at the same time you’re voting on whether or not there’s gonna be war powers in Yemen”.
Rivera then tried to get Gaetz to back down by insulting him and bullying him again, saying “Congressman, with your filibuster right now, you are portraying yourself to the American people as a thoughtful legislator. And yet, the publicity that you get – characteristically – almost inevitably is flamboyant, it’s confrontational.”
Rep. Gaetz hit back immediately, asking Geraldo, with Geraldo giving no answer, why he’d try to smear his as “flamboyant” when he had just made “a substantive argument about changes to the process.”
Jumping in to finish things and silence Geraldo, Hannity interjected, saying “He answered your very specific question about what he was fighting for,” Hannity said. “My only argument – and Matt and I talked in December, you can verify this as true – my only beef with everybody was I wanted everybody to be in full agreement by January 3rd. Four days, it came and went. Now everybody’s on the same page.”
Isn’t it fun watching Geraldo the lib getting silenced on live TV? Perhaps next time he’ll stay silent from the start? Watch the back and forth here:
