A man in Georgia opened fire on a pair of local law enforcement officers who were in the process of questioning him at his hotel after he invited them into his room. One of the officers was killed during the incident and the other sustained serious injuries, officials revealed. The suspect, Kevin Andrews, 35, of Decatur, also received gunshot wounds from one of the officers, according to Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure.

Andrews was taken to a local hospital where he received medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Once he is released from the hospital, he will immediately be transported to the county jail. The shooting occurred on February 1, 2026, near Stone Mountain, which is located 25 miles northeast of Atlanta. The officers were responding to a Holiday Inn Express after an individual in South Carolina reported that someone used their credit card at the hotel, according to a statement released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The statement said that the officers had a conversation with the clerk at the hotel’s front desk, who told them the room was being rented by Andrews. After discovering that Andrews had an active warrant for his arrest issued by DeKalb County for failure to make a court appearance, officers went to his room to arrest him.

A report from Fox News stated that the suspect greeted the officers at the door to the room and invited them to come in. “They began discussing the scenario of the incident with him,” Police Chief McClure said. “And at some point, the suspect produced a handgun and, in an unprovoked attack, fired at our Gwinnett County police officers.”

McClure provided the identities of the officers involved in the incident as Pradeep Tamang and David Reed. Tamang, who was only 25 years old, succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. He had just joined the police department in 2024. Reed was taken to the hospital and stabilized, but is in serious condition. He joined the department in 2015.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp weighed in on the tragic shooting saying that he was “mourning the loss of a brave officer” and “praying for the swift recovery of another.” In a post on X, he said, “This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis, and we are grateful for every one that puts themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians.”

Andrews is being charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The investigation is being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which handles cases involving the shooting of police officers.

The agency then revealed that the status of the investigation is ongoing, as they attempt to put together a complete picture of how the events unfolded. The agency stated that the case will be handed over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for a complete review once the investigation is complete.
