Liberal comedian Chelsea Handler has received substantial pushback from conservatives online after she attacked Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker for his Christian faith and pro-family sentiment earlier this year. After speaking at the commencement ceremony of a Catholic college in the spring, Butker faced backlash for expressing fundamental conservative Christian values, which was evidently controversial in 2024.
In response, Handler went on an angry tirade against the professional kicker, deriding his faith and his intelligence, accusing him of being misogynistic. Handler took particular issue with Butker encouraging young women to prioritize their marriage over more trivial matters such as their careers. Conservatives on social media reacted to Handler’s criticism of this, questioning why she would criticize such values.
The comedian said, “As you may have heard, there’s a man by the name of Harrison Butker, who’s talking more than I typically like for a male. He’s a kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs and I learned that kickers rarely get tackled. So based on his misogynistic rant during a recent commencement address, I’m guessing this Bible thumper thumped himself a little too hard with his Bible and gave himself CTE.” She continued, “First of all, Harrison, you’re a kicker. So you have one important part of your body and it’s not your f***ing brain.”
“Genuinely confused..you don’t think young people should be excited about building a family? I mean one with actual human children…not one with bunch of cats named after the Von Trapp family…but like real children..” one person wrote. One woman pushed back on Handler’s claims, stating, “Am I less of a woman because my husband works his ass off and I take care of our home and family? You sound like the misogynist here… Stop getting mad at women who love their families and the men who enable them to do what they love.”
Another user wrote, “He spoke to Catholics at a Catholic venue about Catholic principles. He also wished those that want to pursue excellence in their field well. Just because you didn’t choose to have a family and are growing bitter about the feminist lie… it doesn’t mean that everyone is on board.”
Moreover, some defended the Butker family from Handler’s attack, illustrating the beauty of marriage. “Chelsea, Isabel has a husband that would literally give his life for her, loves and respects her. She fulfills the most important role in our society as a mother. Why does this anger you so much? Why would you belittle two wonderful people?” one user commented.
Highlighting the happiness of starting a family, another woman offered Handler a different perspective. “Gurl, I’ve done both. I have loved my life as a successful single career woman. I did whatever I wanted. I thought I would never get married because I loved my life. I married and had kids later. What was my regret? That I couldn’t have more kids and that I didn’t start earlier,” she wrote in the comments section.
