Targeting California, one of the farthest left-leaning states in the nation, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, appointed by President Trump, has established a Homelessness Fraud and Corruption Task Force in Los Angeles to investigate potential fraud in federal, state, and local homelessness program funds. The attorney slammed the blue state for the apparent lack of progress despite absurd levels of spending.
For context, the new task force, which will collaborate with the FBI, HUD-OIG, and IRS, will investigate all related programs. Despite the allegations from the FBI, Governor Newsom’s spokesperson and Los Angeles County have promised to cooperate with the groundbreaking investigation.
Anyway, U.S. Attorney Bill Essaylis lambasted the local officials who have been profiting from California’s homeless crisis. Essaylis stated, “Officials have been unable to account for all the expenditures and outcomes, and the homeless crisis has only gotten worse.”
Continuing his condemnation, he added, “Taxpayers deserve answers for where and how their hard-earned money has been spent. If state and local officials cannot provide proper oversight and accountability, we will do it for them. If we discover any federal laws were violated, we will make arrests.”
Echoing these remarks, FBI field office assistant director Akil Davis stated, “Any exploitation of the homelessness crisis via the theft of funds intended to improve conditions cannot and will not be tolerated. Local governments must use state and federal homelessness dollars responsibly. We expect them to deliver results. We share the federal administration’s goal of ensuring taxpayer funds are being used effectively to get people off our streets.”
Reacting to the alleged scandal, a prominent conservative social media account took to X, formerly Twitter, on June 28, 2025, to respond. The user said, “UH-OH 🚨 (U.S) Atty Bil Essayli says he’s set up a task force that’s going to investigate where the ($2B) Gavin Newsome spent on homelessness in (CA). Essayli ain’t playing folks, who else thinks he’d be a great replacement for Pam Bondi as (AG).”
In the comments under this post, social media users seized the opportunity to criticize the controversial blue state. One woman noted, “He needs to stay where he is. CA is deeply corrupt and completely out of control. It’s going to take his firm stance to rectify the harm that has been done. Gavin is termed out but there’s a bunch more like him. Start with Schiff and Pelosi. Corruption begins at home.”

Digging into the details, another conservative stated, “U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli’s task force exposing the $2 billion black hole in Newsom’s homelessness fiasco is a wake-up call! Only 25% of that cash did any good, while $3.4 billion in federal grants since 2020 vanished into thin air, leaving Californians drowning in chaos and crime.”
Concluding, the same user wrote, “Newsom’s $322 billion budget dodge—zero new funds, just a fake agency—screams liberal cover-up. As a conservative, I’m fired up—let’s cheer this probe on, demand transparency, and show these out-of-touch bureaucrats that we’re done funding their failures with our money!”
