According to Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), California leaders such as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom, both Democrats, should be subpoenaed to testify before Congress regarding their response to riots in Los Angeles. Both Newsom and Bass have blamed President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to quell the unrest for enflaming tensions.
For context, since June 7, 2025, LA has been swamped in riots involving attacks on law enforcement and property destruction, allegedly protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests of criminal illegal aliens. While Trump has called in both the National Guard and US Marines to address the lawlessness, Democrats have used the riots as a prop in their cynical anti-Trump agenda.
In any case, Moreno slammed the Democrats for their weak creation to the riots saying, “California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) ought to be subpoenaed to testify before Congress over their response, or lack of, to the city’s riots against enforcement of federal immigration laws.”
Continuing his epic takedown, he declared, “You have the Governor and the Mayor saying the President of the United States is doing too much to protect businesses and protect their own civilians. How are we not heading towards a complete and utter disaster.”
Wrapping up his rebuke, the Ohio Repblican added, “I have grave concerns unless we see movement and Mr. Chairman, what I think we should do is ask those two people – the mayor of Los Angeles and the Governor of California – to come in and explain how their behavior is going to be different in ’26 and ’28 to assure the American people that we are able to put on an event that is worthy of this country.”
Showing her weak leadership, the mayor of the embattled city blamed ICE for her problems, saying, “If immigration raids had not happened here, we would not have the disorder that went on last night. I will tell you that it is peaceful now, but we do not know where and when the next raids will be. That is the concern because people in this city have a rapid response network,” Adding, “If they see ICE they go out and they protest. And so it’s just a recipe for pandemonium that is completely unnecessary.”
Continuing her unacceptable response, Karen Bass whined, “Nothing was happening here. Los Angeles was peaceful before Friday. When we find out when and where the other raids are going to happen, that will determine how the police respond.”

Again shifting responsibility to President Trump, she claimed, “I think the issue here is state power and state sovereignty and so we do not believe, and what the governor is doing is separate from what’s happening in the city. What was the reason that the president had to take the power from the governor and federalized the national guard the night before this action was taken? There was a protest that got a little unruly late at night. It was 100 people. 27 people were arrested. There wasn’t a reason for this.”
Concluding her horrible reaction, Bass said, “It’s an escalation that didn’t have to happen. Why were there raids? You know, we had been told that he was going to go after violent criminals. It wasn’t a drug den. It was a Home Depot. It was places where people are working. So what was the point of doing this?”
