In a recent round of absolutely cringeworthy nonsense from CNN, CNN political commentator Van Jones argued, during a Monday, July 22 segment of his show, that Vice President Kamala Harris has gone from being a cringeworthy, awkward figure in the Democratic Party to a “cool” pop culture icon in the same party in just a matter of days. He said social media has helped her change her image.
As background, on Sunday, July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he would be dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee. In a tweet on the matter, he said, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Van Jones argued that in a matter of days Kamala has become cool. He said, “All the things that were cringe-y about Kamala — her laugh, the coconut tree comment, being unburdened — like, all those weird things she said, she’s gone from cringe to cool in 24 hours as a whole generation has taken all that content and remixed it in all these incredible TikTok videos.”
The “coconut tree” comment is a reference to when Kamala said, in an awkward fashion that has been much-mocked, “My mother used to — she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?'” She added, “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”
Van Jones, in any case, added, “It’s hard to quantify energy, but it seems to me that this is what happened: For three weeks after Joe Biden had that debate debacle, we were kind of sitting outside the ICU with a death watch for democracy. Just imagine what it’s going to be like to have Donald Trump back in charge, what he’s going to do to us.”
Continuing, Van Jones insisted that there is a “rocket ship of enthusiasm” behind VP Harris, saying, “The minute that Joe Biden stepped back and let someone else step forward, she caught a rocket ship of enthusiasm and hope and this pent-up desire for something not the future that looked like it was going to be inevitable.”
Then, commenting on divisions between leftist factions, he said, “This is not the normal Democratic Party where we’re all arguing and busting about pronouns and syllables and semicolons.” He continued, “We are passionate about stopping Donald Trump, and she has pulled together an unbelievable movement behind her. This is not a campaign. This is a movement.”
