Groups of unsupervised teenagers turned a busy Saturday night at the Delta Fair into a chaotic scene marked by fights, frightened families, and a major law enforcement response. Four teenagers were arrested after the violence erupted at the Memphis fairgrounds. Three were charged with simple assault, while another was charged with resisting official detention. Authorities temporarily suspended the fair as deputies moved in to restore order.
The fighting broke out Saturday, September 12th, during the final full Saturday of the 2026 Delta Fair and Music Festival at the Agricenter in Memphis. The fair had opened September 4th and was scheduled to run through Sunday, September 13th. Families had come for midway rides, concerts, livestock shows, circus performances, a petting zoo, a children’s barnyard, and other attractions. The fair was scheduled to remain open until 11 p.m. Saturday, with the midway operating for another hour after the gates closed.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the disturbance involved fights between groups of minors who were attending the fair without adult supervision. Deputies responded as the disorder spread through the crowded event, and fair operations were temporarily suspended “out of an abundance of caution.” The response quickly expanded beyond the deputies working inside the fairgrounds. Tennessee Highway Patrol personnel and Homeland Security investigators were brought in to help control traffic and secure the surrounding parking lots.
As Action News 5 reported, deputies arrested four teenagers during the response. One was charged with resisting official detention, while the other three were charged with simple assault. Because the accused are juveniles, their identities weren’t included in the public account of the arrests. The charges remain allegations unless proven in court.
The violence broke out at an event heavily marketed toward parents and children. A separate Action News 5 report published when the fair opened promoted its rides, live concerts, and deep-fried food, with admission set at $15 for visitors 13 and older. Children between 5 and 12 could enter for $10, while children 4 and younger were admitted free. The fair’s official mission describes the annual festival as “exciting, interactive and educational.”
The fair also had a weekend chaperone policy intended to prevent unsupervised minors from entering during the busiest evening hours. Its published admission rules required visitors 17 and younger to purchase a wristband and be accompanied by an adult at least 25 years old when entering after 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Social media posts placed the disturbance on Saturday night, when that policy should ordinarily have been in effect for any arriving teenagers.

The latest brawl follows several previous safety incidents at the same fair. In 2019, witnesses reported that someone fired several shots into the air, sending fairgoers running and leaving people injured in the resulting stampede, according to Action News 5. Fair officials responded by wanding every visitor, repairing breaks along the perimeter, and increasing the number of security personnel and sheriff’s deputies. That report also cited a large 2015 fight and a separate 2016 stampede caused when a gunshot sound from a Western rodeo frightened the crowd.
Large gatherings of juveniles have caused similar disorder elsewhere around Memphis. In October 2025, police dispersed between 300 and 500 juveniles after several teenagers allegedly attacked a 14-year-old boy and pulled his mother by her hair when she intervened. In July 2026, five juveniles were arrested for disorderly conduct and drug possession after fireworks were discharged into the crowd at Bartlett’s Independence Day celebration. City officials said the incident frightened families and forced portions of the crowd to run from the area.
