    Four Shocked in Shocking Ambush and Murder of Young Man

    Daniel Altman, 25, left his house on April 11th, telling his roommate that he was going to meet a woman. But that’s not what he found. Instead, he was lured to an abandoned residence, where he was brutally murdered by three young men. They then, in cooperation with a young woman with them, stole his car and personal belongings and burned his body to hide it.

    Investigator Jalisa Brown, speaking about the killing and ensuing events, said:

    “A joint investigation into the incident by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office and Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office revealed that prior to the vehicle pursuit in Georgetown County, Serenity Jackson and Marquise Mitchum both operated the victim’s vehicle in the Kingstree area of Williamsburg County. The investigation further revealed that Marquise Mitchum was in possession of the victim’s debit card and provided the debit card to Javon Chattine in an effort to retrieve money from an ATM.”

    “The joint investigation revealed that the missing person from Georgetown County was lured to an abandoned residence on McAlister Road on April 11, when the victim was ambushed and shot by Javon Chattine, Jakiel Chattine and Marquise Mitchum, causing bodily injury resulting in death.”

    Deputies added that, after the murder, the three men involved burned the victim’s body in a nearby, wooded area, and the four then stole his car and personal belongings. In its narrative of what happened, posted to Facebook, the sheriff’s department said:



    On April 13, 2023, Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office contacted investigators with the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office to assist with an investigation involving a missing person. An investigation into the incident revealed that the victim was last seen on April 11, 2023, in Georgetown County and was en route to the Kingstree area of Williamsburg County.
    On April 12, 2023, the victim’s vehicle was involved in a pursuit in Georgetown County, where Serenity Octavia Jackson, Javon Armel Chattine, and Marquise Tyron Mitchum were the vehicle’s occupants. Serenity Jackson was arrested at the time of the pursuit on charges for Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
    A joint investigation into the incident by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office and Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office revealed that before the vehicle pursuit in Georgetown County, Serenity Jackson, and Marquise Mitchum operated the victim’s vehicle in the Kingstree area of Williamsburg County. The investigation further revealed that Marquise Mitchum was in possession of the victim’s debit card and provided the debit card to Javon Chattine in an effort to retrieve money from an ATM.
    On April 18, 2023, Javon Chattine was arrested by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office on active warrants for Receiving Stolen Goods <$2000 and Financial Identity Fraud/Identity Fraud. On April 19, 2023, Marquise Mitchum surrendered himself to Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office on active warrants for Financial Identity Fraud/Identity Fraud and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle. Jackson will be extradited from Georgetown County Detention Center to Williamsburg County Detention Center on pending charges at a later date.
    On April 19, 2023, Investigators with the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to McAlister Road, located in the Kingstree area of Williamsburg County, in reference to human skeletal remains being discovered. Williamsburg County Coroner’s Office then responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.
    The joint investigation revealed that the missing person from Georgetown County was lured to an abandoned residence on McAlister Road on April 11, 2023, when the victim was ambushed and shot by Javon Chattine, Jakiel Chattine, and Marquise Mitchum, causing bodily injury resulting in death. The subjects then disposed of and burned the victim’s body in a nearby wooded area on McAlister Road before stealing the victim’s vehicle and personal belongings.
    Williamsburg County Coroner’s Office will send the skeletal remains for autopsy. The Sheriff’s Office requested South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to process the scene. Williamsburg County Fire Department, Hartsville Police Department, Kingstree Police Department, and SLED also assisted in the investigation.

    The Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Deputies said that the four following people have been charged with these offenses:

    • Javon Armel Chattine, age 20, of Georgetown, SC, was arrested and charged by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office with Murder (S.C. 16-03-0010), Criminal Conspiracy (S.C. 16-17-0410), Destruction or Desecration or Removal of Human Remains (S.C. 16-17-0600(A)), Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime (S.C. 16-23-490), Receiving Stolen Goods < $2000 (S.C. 16-13-180(A)), and Financial Identity Fraud/Identity Fraud (S.C. 16-13-0510(B)
    • Jakiel Treyvon Chattine, age 19, of Georgetown, SC, was arrested and charged by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office with Murder (S.C. 16-03-0010), Criminal Conspiracy (S.C. 16-17-0410), Destruction or Desecration or Removal of Human Remains (S.C. 16-17-0600(A)), and Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime (S.C. 16-23-490).
    • Marquise Tyron Mitchum, age 18, of Andrews, SC, was arrested and charged by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office with Murder (S.C. 16-03-0010), Possession/Sell/Disposal of a Stolen Vehicle >$2000<$10000 (S.C. 16-21-0080), Criminal Conspiracy (S.C. 16-17-0410), Destruction or Desecration or Removal of Human Remains (S.C. 16-17-0600(A)), Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime (S.C. 16-23-490), and Financial Identity Fraud/Identity Fraud (S.C. 16-13-0510(B),
    • Serenity Octavia Jackson, age 18, of Hartsville, SC, was arrested by Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office and charged by Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office with Possession/Sell/Disposal of a Stolen Vehicle >$10000 (S.C. 16-21-0080(3)).
