Former Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player Steve Garvey announced that he will be running for the US Senate in 2024. Garvey, who played for the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers during his career, will be running as a Republican in the 2024 Senate election in deep-blue California.
Like many others, Garver has become disgusted by the constant incompetency of those in power in Washington, D.C., and plans to do something about it. Garver was a first baseman for 18 seasons playing a key role for both of the California teams that he suited up for during his career. He won the MVP Award in 1974.
Garvey released his very first campaign ad on Tuesday on his YouTube account, featuring sounds from his elite baseball career that endeared him to the people of California. The video opens with a radio call of a Steve Garvey homerun as he is seen trotting around the baseball in old game footage.
He said, “Over 50 years ago, I came to California for the first time. September 1st of 1969, the Dodgers called me up and my dreams came true. Over the next 20 years, I played for the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. I played in front of millions of fans. I never played for Democrats or Republicans or Independents. I played for all of you.”
He continued, “Now I am running for US Senate in California. A state that I believe at one time was the heartbeat of America, but now is just a murmur. It’s gonna be a common sense campaign. It’s gonna be difficult, but we can do this together, you and I. It’s time to get off the bench. It’s time to put the uniform on. It’s time to get back in the game.”
Garvey faces an uphill battle in a state that leans so heavily blue that many in the Republican Party consider it a lost cause. In recent years, however, more and more high-profile celebrities have talked about the disgust that they feel for the current Democrat leaders of the state and have even taken up their belongings and left for states like Montana or Nevada.
The Daily Wire quoted Garvey as saying, “I talk about a chorus of career politicians from the state of California that have told people what’s good for them, that your life is great, and it’s just not true. They know that their life could be better. They know they’ve seen better days in California, that’s why they are still here; they love California. But they need help.”
Garvey has an insurmountable task ahead. On the other hand, to flip a Senate seat in the bluest stronghold in America could spell the next beginning of the Red Wave that many predicted would come in 2020. With 2024 just around the corner, his Senate campaign will be one to keep an eye on.
