Gina Carano, the former Disney+ actress in the series “The Mandalorian,” recently discussed her firing and the ensuing legal battle she is fighting against Disney. Carano incited intense backlash from leftists resulting from her social media posts about politically charged topics such as pandemic protocols, the woke gender movement, Black Lives Matter, and more.
It is speculated that her expression of these views led to her ultimate firing from Disney. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress described the “unforgivable sin in Hollywood” as “a person who wouldn’t perfectly conform at a time when emotions were running wild in the world.” Carano now is suing The Walt Disney Company for “millions in lost income” over what she alleges is “discriminatory treatment” in her firing, predicated on her political views.
Elon Musk’s pro-freedom of speech social media platform, X Corp, claimed it funded the legal initiative as part of its “commitment to free speech” following a promise from Musk to fund her legal bills if she was “unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform [X].”
Carano praised Musk for his commitment to free speech and his company’s willingness to assist in her legal battle with Disney. “I think it’s pretty incredible what he is doing,” she said. “A lot of billionaires put their money into buying islands and building bunkers. Elon Musk is using his money to fight massive injustice battles.” The actress’ legal team has made the case that “Disney bullied Ms. Carano, trying to force her to conform to their views about cultural and political issues – when that bullying failed, they fired her.”
In 2020, Carano faced backlash from social media for writing “boop/bop/beep” as her preferred pronouns in her Twitter bio following a request from fans for her to show support for the transgender community. However, she indicated that her intent was not to be offensive, stating, “I thought it was cute, like R2-D2.”
Following this incident, Carano claims she was forced to attend what she describes as a “reeducation camp” where she had to participate in meetings with leaders from the transgender community. However, she chose not to attend such meetings.
“I said, ‘Can I take five or six of these trans leaders to dinner? I’ll pay for it,’ ” Carano said in her interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They denied that. They were very upset. They said the meeting would be a ‘litmus test.’ I’m not even sure what that means.”
“Seriously? This was the start of the end for me? A 20-year career, the blood, sweat and tears of fighting? I never compromised myself for a job,” Carano added. “I never ended in a bad situation where I did anything inappropriate. I had a clean and clear climb to where I got to and was going to just keep going. And boop/bop/beep was that harmful?”
Carano further described the entertainment industry’s hostility toward those who refuse to conform to its worldview. For years, many have lamented the overwhelmingly leftist politics found within Hollywood. “If the unforgivable sin in Hollywood is being a person who wouldn’t perfectly conform at a time when emotions were running wild in the world, then that’s probably not a Hollywood I’ll ever belong to,” she said. “But I think once egos are put aside, Hollywood has the opportunity to grow just like we all do.”
