Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) recently criticized the Green Party and those who voted for Senate candidate Leila Hazou. Fetterman blasted the Green Party and its voters, calling the “dipsh*ts” for casting their vote for Hazou. In a tight race, Hazou took votes away from Democratic incumbent Bob Casey, who lost the race to Republican challenger Dave McCormick.
As of writing this article, the race has been officially called by the Associated Press for McCormick, who successfully flipped the swing state Senate seat. With 98 percent of the vote counted, McCormick sits at 49 percent, compared to Casey’s 48.5 percent. Notably, Hazou took 0.9 percent of the vote along with Libertarian candidate John Thomas who brought in 1.3 percent.
Sounding off, Fetterman took to X, writing, “Pennsylvania is going to count every last vote. That’s not controversial—that’s the law. Also, Green dipsh*ts’ votes helping elect the GOP.” The senator received pushback from conservatives in the comments section. “Calling Green voters “dipshits” is not a great way to win them over,” Elon Musk commented under Fetterman’s post.
The American Tribune previously reported on comments from Fetterman before the election, indicating that Trump was showing strong signs in the critical battleground state. CNN’s Dana Bash asked Fetterman, “There’s there’s 48 hours left in this race. When Trump won Pennsylvania you said your party wasn’t connecting with voters enough that it needs. What are you seeing now? Are you seeing any of the same warning signs in 2024?”
“No, there’s nothing new here. I said the same thing in 2016. I said it will be close. There’s an issue there, and I said it is going to be close in 2020, and it was. I have been saying this: when it was Biden or Harris, it was going to be very close,” the senator responded. “And Trump definitely has a connection with voters here in Pennsylvania. That’s why it’s going to be close. But there’s a lot of tremendous amount of energy for Harris too.”
Noting the palpable enthusiasm behind Trump, he continued, “I was doing an event in Indiana County. Very, very red. And there was a superstore of Trump stuff, and it was a hundred feet long. [There were] dozens of T-shirts and hats and bumper stickers and all kinds of, I mean, it’s like, Where does this all come from? It’s the kind of thing that has taken on its own life. And it’s like something very special exists there. And that doesn’t mean that I admire it. It’s just — it’s real.”
Fetterman also acknowledged the support from important figures backing Trump, such as Elon Musk. “And now [Elon] Musk is joining him. I mean, to a lot of people, that’s Tony Stark. That’s the world’s richest guy. And he’s obviously, and undeniably, a brilliant guy, and he’s saying, Hey, that’s my guy for president. That’s going to really matter,” he said.
Months before the election, Fetterman also indicated that it would be an “obvious” choice in a matchup between Trump and Harris. “I think if you match up Trump with Harris, and I think that’s what this is really about, and I do believe he’s going to win Pennsylvania. And I do believe it’s going to be close, but whether it’s Biden, whether it was Clinton, or whether it was with Vice President Harris I think it’s going to be very close.”
