The election season is on the horizon, and while the GOP bid appears to be all but over, as former President Donald Trump owns a double-digit lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the democrat side is rife with uncertainty and a general malaise for Joe Biden. There is little excitement for the current president, and rumors abound about whether or not he will even run or perhaps announce he is stepping down at the end of his term.
The majority of polls show Biden losing in a rematch with President Trump, and many Americans, even liberals, believe Biden is too old to run it back for a second term. With every malaprop, misdirection on stage, and nonsensical story, Biden appears to be losing grip on what is going on around him, and Americans are concerned. As public confidence in the president flails, an unlikely, familiar, and perhaps unwanted ally is stepping in to aid the president’s sinking re-election campaign.
Former First Lady, Secretary of State, and runner-up to Donald Trump in 2016, Hillary Clinton, has been tabbed to take on a larger role in Biden’s campaign for 2024. Despite not being an official member of Biden’s campaign team, Clinton has hosted a big-dollar fundraiser at her home, pumping dollars into Joe Biden’s war chest, and has also published an op-ed in the leftist publication The Atlantic in defense of the president’s response to the war in Gaza.
It is believed Clinton’s popularity with women and what is left of the democrat’s core base could help boost Biden’s sagging popularity and inject some optimism for the octagenarian’s second term. Former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle said: “I don’t know of a couple that could be any more helpful to President Biden than the Clintons. They have an enormous level of support and admiration within the Democratic Party. You’ve had politicians over the years say that every election is the most important election in our lifetimes, This is literally the most important election in all of American history. The stakes have never been this high. Everyone feels the need to do their part to ensure that we get through the next 14 months.”
Despite the hyperbole from Daschle about the importance of the election from the democrat’s side, not everyone is excited about Clinton stepping in. It is a move that smacks of desperation, considering Clinton lost to Trump in 2016, and the irony wasn’t lost on social media. The analysis on X ranged from disbelief to hilarity as commenters weighed in. One user wrote: “Excellent! Bring in the woman incredibly disliked in swing states to campaign for Biden,” while another wrote, “It’s entirely possible that the Democratic Party actively does NOT want to win the presidency in 2024,” and a third hilariously noted, “She couldn’t even win her own election how is she gonna win his for him?”
It wasn’t just pithy users on social media pointing out the absurdity of the last candidate to lose to Trump trying to help a fading Democrat beat him again. Even some hard leftists expressed their dismay. Former MSNBC analyst and far-left commentator Mehdi Hasan weighed in on X: “Ah yes, when you’re a Democrat struggling to beat Donald Trump, you call for help from… *checks notes*… the last Democrat to lose to Donald Trump,” and fellow Democrat Marianne Williamson, who fancies herself a competitor for the Democrat nomination also took advantage of the moment when she wrote, “We can go forward, not backwards.”
It is clear that not all are on board with Clinton’s help. The Democrats appear to be in panic mode, and all stops are being pulled out to gin up support for Biden and his record-low approval rating. All the money in the world isn’t likely to save the current president, but the party is willing to try anything to save its hold on the White House, even if it is the last loser before Joe Biden.
