The Chosen star Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus Christ in the Angel Studios Bible docudrama, blasted the practice abortion as “satanic” and warned participants at the 50th annual March for Life gathering that “just as God is real, Satan is also real.”
The March for Life event was the first since the Supreme Court overturned the half-century-old decision of Roe v Wade last summer. The majority decision meant states would each decide for themselves how it legislated the issue; some states moved closer to bans while others enshrined the practice through birth.
Roumie admonished the pro-life, anti-abortion crowd that Satan is not a fairy tale. Instead, he walks among us and his practices can be seen through such evils as the practice of abortion.
“I’m not talking about the simplistic cartoon of some dude with horns and a tail. I’m talking about the father of lies, the great deceiver, the diabolical slanderer who pushes you to doubt when you know in your heart the right thing to do,” the actor said. “And he is not about to give up this fight, either. In fact, he’s doubling down because, guess what? His time is limited. So, he’s throwing everything he has at the world and all of us in it. And countless are being deceived as a result.”
Focusing on Satan as a figure and the satanic practice of abortion, he added that the Satan “wants your and my destruction” as well as saying he “wants us to believe that abortion does not harm us individually and as a society.”
“So, please, I beg of you, pray for those who do not have the faith, the strength, the clarity of purpose that you here do,” Roumie continued. Continuing with that message of redemption, he added that “we know how the story ends. God won.”
“It is good, but it is far from finished,” he said in reference to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. It was a “glimmer of hope” in the ongoing battle for the moral fabric of society.
At the same time as the gathering of supporters of the movement for life convened for community and speeches, a separate mass was held in Washington, D.C.’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for the National Prayer Vigil for Life. There, the chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ pro-life office praised the Court’s landmark overturning of the 1973 Roe ruling, calling it a “blight on our nation.
“Today we have so much to celebrate. For the first time in the 49-year-history of the March for Life, we can say that Roe vs. Wade, a blight on our nation, our system of justice, and our culture, is no more,” Arlington Bishop Michael Burbidge said during his homily.
“This is a moment for joy, and for gratitude; a moment to recall the countless souls who have dedicated themselves to political and social action, to prayer, and to service in the name of this cause,” he added.
Pope Francis, no friend of traditional or conservative values, also chimed in on the annual event. He said he was “deeply grateful” for the efforts to “defend the right to life of the most innocent and vulnerable members of our human family.”
