Following Donald Trump’s massive victory in the 2024 presidential election, there has been an outbreak of “Trump dance” celebration, mimicking the president-elect’s signature choreography. However, as liberals and mainstream media networks lash out at the celebratory dance, the NFL recently announced that it has “no issue” with the celebration, making the Trump dance “fair game.”
A slew of high-profile players have busted out the move during recent games, such as Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders, Calvin Ridley of the Tennessee Titans, and Za’Darius Smith of the Detroit Lions. Commenting on behalf of the NFL, spokesman Brian McCarthy recently explained to Front Office Sports that the league has no objection to the dance.
“There’s no issue with a celebratory dance such as what took place yesterday or the previous week with the 49ers on November 10,” McCarthy said. However, he noted that it is up to the discretion of television networks as to whether they want to air the celebrations to their viewers. “It’s up to the networks to cover them as they see fit,” he added.
Former Bears player Brian Urlacher weighed in on the phenomenon, claiming closeted Trump supporters are now emboldened after the results of the election. During a Fox News appearance, he said, “People were scared for a while. You don’t want people to talk bad about you. You know how we’ve been talked about the last four years if you’re a Donald Trump supporter. But I think now, no one’s scared anymore. It’s nice to see these guys coming out.”
Furthermore, senior media writer at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies Tom Jones explained that the league could not govern the dance without prohibiting virtually all celebrations. “I don’t see how the NFL could stop these Trump-dance celebrations. Like any celebration, as long as it’s not significantly disrupting the game, the NFL should allow it,” Jones told Front Office Sports reporter Michael McCarthy.
Jones said, “If you were to stop this celebration, you would seemingly have to ban all celebrations. I’m sure the NFL isn’t crazy about celebrations with a political bent, but putting a ban on them would open up a whole other set of problems. My guess is it’s all just a fad that is going to fade pretty quickly anyway. The NFL is probably thinking that, too.”
The statement from the NFL sparked a significant reaction across social media. “The NFL has announced that the “Trump Dance” celebration is fair game and not punishable by a fine. It’s fully within the rules to do it. CBS & Fox have been editing out the celebration,” the popular X account Say Cheese wrote. Various others offered their reaction as well. “The NFL went from kneeling during the national anthem to dancing the Trump YMCA dance. That is what you call Making America Great Again!” MAGA Resource wrote.
The American Tribune reported on social media backlash directed at CBS for seemingly refusing to show the Trump dance celebration in a social media post. One such angry usernwrote, “@CBSNews @NFLonCBS is complete trash!” Another account, Aesthetica, claimed , “Why did you edit out the Trump dance?” On the same note, another account said, “Cutting out the Trump dance celebration? Wow. This is why CBS is a joke.” On the same note, another commenter wrote, “Everybody needs to boycott cbs abc cnn msn . I have!”
