Recently, experts have warned about the state of Hawaii’s ruling against oil companies, claiming it could be a “stalking horse” that would essentially force Americans to live under the Green New Deal. Throughout the Biden administration, there has been an increasingly hostile stance toward the energy industry amid efforts to fight climate change.
The city of Honolulu asserted in a lawsuit that oil companies such as Exxon and Chevron should be fined billions of dollars over their alleged responsibility for adverse weather events, such as rising sea levels, heat waves, flooding, etc., that were supposedly caused by climate change.
Moreover, the U.S. Supreme Court is considering issuing a ruling on the case after some companies have filed an appeal on the ruling. Reports indicate that some justices on the Hawaii Supreme Court have mocked the U.S. Constitution and its authority by citing the “spirit of Aloha” in their rulings.
According to reports, the oil companies that appealed the ruling issued by the Hawaii Supreme Court have claimed that federal law prevents states from influencing policies applied to all states. Critics of the anti-fossil fuel move have argued that Hawaii’s highest court is overstepping its judicial authority.
President of Judicial Crisis Network (JCN), Carrie Severino, stated, “One rogue state court in Hawaii can’t dictate climate policy for the nation.” She added that it is ultimately the job of Congress to determine national policy that companies must adhere to.
Furthermore, former Arizona Solicitor General O.H. Skinner, the CEO of Alliance for Consumers, claimed the ruling was “a stalking horse for the Green New Deal, with lefty enclaves looking to strong-arm progressive lifestyle choices onto an otherwise unwilling public by targeting industries that have yet to fall in line with the progressive ideal.”
Skinner added that the biased judges that makeup Hawaii’s Supreme Court have an agenda to go after companies in the fossil fuel industry. “The hyper-ideological justices on the Hawaii Supreme Court seem to want to bankrupt fossil fuel companies and see this lawsuit as a magical key that unlocks unlimited power and a lot of money for progressive agendas,” he said.
It is further reported that Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald colluded with a far-left judicial activist group, the Environmental Law Institute (ELI), that seeks to train judges on how to address “climate change litigation.”
Skinner explained that the Hawaii ruling will impact the daily lives of Americans who have already struggled with the impact of the historically high inflation over the past few years. The Arizona solicitor noted that the move could lead to higher costs of all things derived from fossil fuels.
“Honolulu’s proverbial ‘spirit of Aloha’ assault here, if left unchecked, will actually bore a hole in the pockets of Americans as it marches across industry after industry, increasing the costs of food, cars, travel, and all the other basic building blocks of the modern American life at a pace that everyday Americans won’t be able to afford,” he said. “This is the high court’s problem because it will have compounding impacts on everyday Americans who are already struggling to keep up with the rising costs just to live a decent life.”
