A resurfaced video from February of 2023 shows Lakers fans booing President Joe Biden when a video of him congratulating Lebron James was played on the Jumbotron at the Lakers game in which Lebron James became an all-time NBA scoring leader. Many of the fans went wild with booing Joe, and one TikTok video from the time that took off included a fan, somewhat surprised by the widespread nature of the booing, exclaiming, “Everybody’s booing Joe Biden!”
In the short, congratulatory statement from Biden that was played after Lebron broke the NBA scoring record, President Biden first said, “LeBron congratulations! With your whole heart and soul, you broke a hallowed record.” That came after Lebron put up 38 points in the game, played against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and managed to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record, which was 38,387 points.
In any case, Biden continued, saying that Lebron had “elevated the game” with how he has played and “inspired a nation to do better,” saying, ‘”You elevated the game and more than that like Kareem and Bill Russell and others who came before you. You challenged and inspired a nation to do better, do better and live up to our full promise.”
That comment that Lebron had “inspired” America came despite Lebron’s unpatriotic comments during 2020, such as when he praised Collin Kaepernick and kneeled during the National Anthem during the Black Lives Matter protest-filled summer months of 2020.
Concluding his statement in support of Lebron, President Biden then again congratulated him and his whole family, saying, “So keep it going man. Keep the faith and congratulations to you and your wonderful family – your mom, Gloria, your wife, Savannah, and your beautiful children Bronny, Bryce and Zhuri. God bless you all.”
That speech got booed by many of the fans in the stadium despite the game occurring in Los Angeles, with the fact that the Lakers were playing against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with Oklahoma being a deep red state, potentially boosting the number of conservatives who were in the stands and ready to start booing Joe Biden.
One video of the incident was posted to X by Breaking Digest, which posted, “Crowd boos Joe Biden’s speech for Lebron in honor of becoming all time NBA scoring leader”. Commenting on that post, one person wrote, “Joe is unwelcome anywhere, The entire country knows what Joe is all about, and how he got into office.” Watch that video here:
Another video, this one posted to TikTok, showed fans booing as Joe spoke on the jumbotron, with the person filming laughing and commenting, while obviously somewhat surprised, that lots of people in the stadium are booing Joe Biden. While it was hard to tell what percentage of the attendees were actually booing, the person heard in the video did seem to think a large number of people were participating. Watch that video here:
