Big news might finally be on the horizon for those hoping to see the politicians in sanctuary jurisdictions held accountable for what their policies have wrought and how they have harmed America: a House Republican is pushing forward a bill that, if passed, would impose major criminal penalties on the government officials in sanctuary jurisdictions.
The lawmaker behind the legal attack on sanctuary cities and those who enable them is Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA). He introduced the Establishing Responsibility for Illegals’ Crimes and Adding Deterrence and Accountability for Mayors’ Sanctuary Cities Act, or the ERIC ADAMS Act, on Friday, August 1.
If it manages to make its way through both houses of the legislature, the bill would impose criminal liability on the generally Democratic mayors of sanctuary cities if an illegal alien living in their sanctuary jurisdiction is found guilty of murder. In fact, the mayors could face up to seven years in prison.
Specifically, under the provisions of the bill, a major can be charged with “criminal negligence resulting in manslaughter,” a crime carrying up to seven years, if an illegal alien committed a murder in his or her city and if “the mayor knowingly adopted, maintained, or failed to repeal a sanctuary policy that materially restricted cooperation with Federal immigration enforcement, and such policy directly and foreseeably contributed to the failure to detain or remove.”
Commenting on the bill in a post on X, Rep. Carter noted that those who indirectly allow murders to occur by maintaining sanctuary jurisdictions need to be held accountable for it, saying, “The ERIC ADAMS Act will hold mayors of sanctuary cities criminally liable for murders committed in their jurisdictions by illegal aliens.”
Continuing, he added that many of those Americans who have been slain by illegal aliens would be alive if our immigration laws were respected rather than ignored in sanctuary jurisdictions, such as Athens, GA, where Laken Riley was murdered. He said, “Laken Riley and countless others could still be alive today if our immigration laws were respected. These mayors have blood on their hands, and it’s time they are held accountable.”
Similarly, in another post with much the same message, Rep. Carter said, “I’ve been a mayor. I understand the role they play in public safety. That’s why I introduced the ERIC ADAMS Act; Mayors who ignore immigration laws and enable tragedy will be held accountable. No more excuses, Laken Riley deserved better.”

Rep. Carter said much the same thing in a statement to Fox News Digital, again referencing the tragic, heartwrenching story of Laken Riley’s death in a sanctuary jurisdiction. He said, “Laken Riley and countless other loved ones could still be alive today if our immigration laws were respected by mayors of sanctuary cities.”
Continuing in that statement to Fox News, he argued that those who create the environment in which these crimes occur should be held responsible for it. He said, “As far as I’m concerned, they have blood on their hands and should be held personally accountable for creating a lawless environment that allows criminal illegal aliens to commit murder.”
