The left-leaning mainstream media responded to Biden’s State of the Union address, which saw him get the name of Laken Riley wrong, among other blunders and bad moments, with much praise, saying that it was an “energetic” address.
Jake Tapper, a CNN host, was particularly approving of Biden, saying that though “his presentation, his enunciation” was “not as clear as it once was a decade or two ago” that “his mind did seem fairly sharp.” Similarly, CNN’s Dana Basch told Tapper that Democrats “wanted him to be a fighter and boy fight did he deliver.”
Numerous other CNN hosts praised Biden as well. CNN’s Abby Phillip, for example, claimed that Biden managed to “trap” and “troll” Republicans. “What’s so striking to me is that Republicans – their whole thing right now is that Joe Biden is slow, that he’s too old, that he can’t do this. They walk into this trap every time that this White House sets for them,” Phillip said. She later added, “He had a lot of moments where he was kind of trolling them. And that worked for him in this speech.”
Yet another CNN personality, John King, approvingly referred to Biden’s State of the Union address as a “campaign speech,” saying, “This is the 36th of these for me, state of the unions or presidential addresses… never heard one so political, never heard one that is such a campaign speech.”
Yet another CNN personality, Daniel Dale, told Tapper that it was a “factual” speech, saying, “I found Jake, it was quite a factual speech, at least in terms of the assertions of fact, I was able to check. Of course, I don’t check the many, many subjective opinions that fill these kinds of speeches. But President Biden did make at least a few false or misleading claims that I do want to address. Listen to something he said about the federal budget deficit.”
CNN wasn’t the only network boosting Biden. MSNBC got in on the action as well, with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace saying that the speech “was like a punch in the face to every Republican in the room” in the first “120 seconds.” Similarly, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell added that Biden was energetic, saying, “I’ve never brought that much energy to the 10pm hour.”
Nicolle Wallace added, “Everybody knows that this was a great speech and everybody knows that if this is the message going into the next eight months, the polls will soon reflect that and this will be a real, real fight. I thought this was a really remarkable State of the Union.”
On a similar note over on NBC News, Savannah Guthrie argued that the Biden State of the Union Address was “energetic and optimistic,” and Kristen Welker alleged a Democrat had told her that “This was a total 10.”
CNN did, however, admit that Biden’s address was divisive rather than unifying. Watch that admission here:
