An elderly man in the town of Redington Beach, Florida, had to use a firearm to save his wife from an intruder in the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 27. The incident occurred at about 3:00 am on that morning, when the man heard his wife in distress and rushed to her aid, using his firearm to shoot the intruder and save her.
The local Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office released a press statement in which it described both the shooting incident itself and how the sheriff’s deputies responded to it, describing the string of burglaries the suspect allegedly engaged in and why deadly force needed to be used by the homeowner.
Beginning, the press release described how police were alerted to the incident and the wee hours of the morning when it occurred, saying, “On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at approximately 3:16 a.m., deputies assigned to the Patrol Operations Bureau responded to 16400 Gulf Boulevard in North Redington Beach for reports of a male subject, later identified as 51-year-old Robert Jackson, standing in the roadway of Gulf Boulevard yelling.”
Continuing, the sheriff’s office went on to note how they discovered the suspect after a second attempted burglary, saying, “While deputies were responding to the initial call, a second 911 call was received at 3:23 a.m. at 208 Bath Club Boulevard North, reporting a residential Burglary. Upon arrival, deputies located Jackson in the roadway on Bath Club Boulevard with a single gunshot wound.”
Then, returning to the first incident, the sheriff’s office described what happened during the first burglary attempt and how he began a physical struggle with the homeowner’s wife, saying, “Through their investigation, detectives state Jackson was the male subject who was standing in the roadway of Gulf Boulevard yelling before traveling east on Bath Club Boulevard. Jackson then smashed through the front window of 208 Bath Club Boulevard using a large rock and entered the residence. Once inside the residence, Jackson encountered 74-year-old Sherry Treadwell and began to struggle with her physically.”
That’s when Mr. Treadwell got involved and opened fire on the suspected burglar, as the sheriff’s office described, saying, “Sherry’s husband, 76-year-old John Treadwell, heard her scream his name in distress and saw her struggling with Jackson. Fearing for his and his wife’s safety, John retrieved his firearm and shot Jackson once in the right shoulder.”
Continuing, the sheriff’s office described how the second attempted burglary led to the suspect’s capture and arrest, writing, “Jackson fled the residence and then attempted to break into another nearby residence unsuccessfully. After the failed second burglary attempt, Jackson fled down the street, where he was stopped by responding deputies.”
Finally, the sheriff’s office described what actions were being taken after the suspect’s arrest, writing, “Jackson was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jackson is charged with Burglary with Battery and Attempted Residential Burglary. Jackson will be transported to the Pinellas County Jail once he is released from the hospital. Detectives state this incident was a random act and there is no danger to the public. The investigation continues.”
