Former Vice President Kamala Harris got roasted online after a clip from a recent public appearance showed her telling Black women they should be more “transactional” with their votes. The short clip made the rounds after Harris leaned into a new riff about voters saying, “I’m gonna get mine also.” Social media users quickly piled on, mocking everything from the line itself to the delivery.
The moment came during Harris’ appearance at the “Power Rising 2026 Summit” in Chicago, where she took part in a “Sunday Soul Brunch” conversation before a room full of Black women and political activists. The summit was held at the Hilton Chicago and focused on political engagement, economic power, health, and the role Black women will play heading into the midterm elections and the 2028 presidential race.
Harris was talking about how political leaders and strategists count on Black women to remain reliable Democratic voters. She argued that Black women are often expected to vote out of civic duty, personal values, and respect for previous generations who fought for voting rights. From there, Harris said Black women should start demanding more in return from the party and candidates who depend on them.
The Root posted the full Sunday Soul Brunch conversation with Harris, where she spoke at length about the Democratic Party, President Donald Trump, the 2026 midterms, and her view of how Black women should use their political power. In the clip, Harris said, “I think it’s okay for us to be a bit transactional, too, and to say I’m gonna get mine also.”
Harris continued by saying Black women should not simply be counted on as “the backbone of the Democratic Party.” She said Democratic leaders should understand that when they start counting on those votes, “it’s because they better produce if they win.” Harris framed the point as a demand for accountability, but the clip itself gave critics plenty to work with once it hit X.

End Wokeness posted the clip with the caption, “Kamala Harris is drunk on stage again.” The post drew hundreds of replies, and commenters had a field day with Harris’ awkward delivery, joking about the speech and the way she leaned into the “I’m gonna get mine” line.
One commenter under the same video joked, “What do think her drink of choice is?” Another widely shared reaction came from David Santa Carla, who commented under the clip and wrote, “’I’m awn get mines also’ *landslide loss to Trump*”.
The line fit the broader reaction, with critics treating the moment as another Harris foot-in-mouth clip. Others focused more on the substance of the comment, drawing parallels to famous quotes about civic participation like the John F. Kennedy line “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”. B_Dog_33_ posted a meme contrasting Harris with, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask when imma get mine”
WBEZ reported that Harris also used the event to criticize Trump, accusing him of making America “weaker” and arguing that Democrats should not talk about rebuilding the country with nostalgia for how things used to be. She also talked about a recent listening tour through North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi.
Harris has been taking more public steps back onto the political stage since leaving office, and her appearance in Chicago came as speculation continues about whether she could make another run in 2028. The former vice president has said she is thinking about it, and her recent speeches have included criticism of Trump, warnings about Democratic complacency, and arguments about what the party owes some of its most loyal voting blocs.
