Dolly Parton’s decision to wear a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader uniform during her halftime performance on Thanksgiving has been causing a giant stir on the internet. The noise surrounding the outfit has become so loud now that her family is even jumping into the fray to defend the choice of clothing that has the internet divided.
Dolly Parton took the stage on Thanksgiving to sing her timeless hit songs like “Jolene” and “9 to 5” to a packed crowd and a massive television audience. However, the way that she dressed became the star of the show instead of the music that she performed.
While some Americans loved Parton’s choice to dress as a cheerleader, others felt that the attire was too revealing for a broadcast on a day when an entire family may be gathered around the television set. Yet more people claimed the clothes to be too revealing for a person of Dolly’s age. This is where her sister, Stella Parton, chimed in to defend the clothing.
Stella Parton, in a brave defense of her sister on a national stage, Tweeted, “I personally thought my big sister Dolly was cute as hell in her Dallas Cowboys cheerleading costume at the half time show on Thanksgiving. To those of you being so critical of a 77 year old kicking up her heels, I say fuck yourself. Shame on you not her.”
The performance from Dolly was in connection with a massive fundraising event on behalf of the Salvation Army, with the hopes of increasing donations for the busy Christmas season in which millions of Americans and other folks worldwide will be receiving aid from the charitable organization.
Dolly, amid the controversy, shared her pride in being able to work with the Salvation Army and perform at the Thanksgiving Halftime Show in a quote that was shared by People.
Dolly exclaimed, “Those Red Kettles have long been a symbol of hope for our friends and neighbors who are facing hard times. My goal is to encourage everyone who can to donate and support their neighbors in need. Every small act of generosity helps, and together, we can all love our neighbors this holiday season and beyond.”
Dolly also received unlikely aid from Whoopi Goldberg, a costar of “The View.” Goldberg jumped to the defense of Parton amid the backlash being hurled online and vocalized her support for the iconic country music legend.
Goldberg explained, “Apparently, my turkey wasn’t the only thing online that people were hating. Dolly Parton stole the show on Thanksgiving at the Cowboys/Commanders game dressed as a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, but some critics told her to act her age… Bite me!”
Dolly may have upset some people online with her bold choice of outfit during her highly anticipated Thanksgiving Day performance, but she also left with some allies, both new and old, who were willing to defend her against the online outrage publicly. What is more, Dolly got her name out there as her album “Rockstar” continues to pick up steam.
