Attorney General Pam Bondi is now leading the Justice Department in a lawsuit against Washington, D.C. police over its unconstitutional ban on semi-automatic weapons, in a measure designed to help protect the Second Amendment. Bondi announced the lawsuit, going on to say that the Metropolitan Police Department is wrongfully banning the AR-15 rifle, along with “many other firearms protected under the Second Amendment.”
“The District’s gun laws require anyone seeking to own a gun to register it with D.C. Metro Police,” the DOJ went on to say in a statement. “However, the D.C. Code provides a broad registration ban on numerous firearms — an unconstitutional incursion into the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens seeking to own protected firearms for lawful purposes. MPD’s current pattern and practice of refusing to register protected firearms is forcing residents to sue to protect their rights and to risk facing wrongful arrest for lawfully possessing protected firearms.”
Bondi, in a different statement, reiterated the goal of the Trump administration to preserve the right to bear arms, saying, “Today’s action from the Department of Justice’s new Second Amendment Section underscores our ironclad commitment to protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.”
“Washington, D.C.’s ban on some of America’s most popular firearms is an unconstitutional infringement on the Second Amendment — living in our nation’s capital should not preclude law-abiding citizens from exercising their fundamental constitutional right to keep and bear arms,” she continued, according to Fox News.
The report then revealed that the lawsuit comes just a few short weeks after Harmeet Dhillon, who serves as the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, announced that the Justice Department would be taking “a lot more action” to preserve gun rights through the creation of the new department. “Some of the things we’re seeing, and that is going to be the focus of our work around the country, includes multi-thousand-dollar costs for citizens to apply for concealed carry permits,” she stated.
“Other jurisdictions are having unreasonably long delays. Other jurisdictions are outlawing guns that should be protected by the Second Amendment under the recent Supreme Court precedent,” she continued. She also explained how gun rights are the great equalizer for individuals who are more vulnerable than the general population, saying they equalize ” the ability of those of us, women, people with disabilities, and others who might otherwise be more vulnerable, to be able to protect ourselves.”
According to our Founding Fathers, the Second Amendment was created in order to protect the citizenry from the tyranny of an oppressive government. It was a means of ensuring the common man was equipped with the tools necessary to protect life, liberty, and property. However, it’s been explained throughout the nation’s history that individuals seeking to take away the property of others by force (theft) or take away their lives (murder) are a form of tyranny, therefore, all Americans have the God-given right to protect themselves with the weapons of the day, which, in this case would be guns.

Statistics show that it takes local police almost 8 minutes to respond to calls for assistance, and as many experts on gun rights have pointed out, there’s a lot that can happen in that amount of time. Law-abiding citizens should be allowed to have access to guns for self-protection in order to prevent harm from coming to themselves or their loved ones, they say.
