Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently announced late last month that approximately $1 billion worth of contracts across various government agencies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The move comes as President Donald Trump has sought to combat DEI in the federal government and cut wasteful spending.
The official DOGE X account posted the news on January 29, stating that 85 DEI-related contracts across over two dozen government agencies had been canceled. Conservatives reacted, celebrating the move, with some describing the DEI industry as a “$1+ billion grifting enterprise” that served to fund left-wing causes.
“Through 1/29/2025, 85 DEIA related contracts totaling ~$1B have been terminated within the Dept. of Ed, GSA, OPM, EPA, DoL, Treasury, DoD, USDA, Commerce, DHS, VA, HHS, State, NSF, NRC, NLRB, PBGC, USAID, RRB, SSA, SBA, BLM, CFPB, NPS, and NOAA,” DOGE wrote on X.
Washington University professor Daniel Coyne opined, “US government grants for DEI were a $1+ billion grifting enterprise run to line to pockets of left wing organizations….” Many celebrated the move to restore trust and transparency. Another person said, “This is fantastic work! The transparency is unbelievable and very much appreciated. 🔥”
Praising Musk’s leadership at DOGE, one user wrote, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am literally blinking back tears at your successes at DOGE, and the fact you are taking no salary to do this. God bless and protect you, Elon, and all those you love.”
Echoing this sentiment, another comment read, “Excellent. Keep up the good work. All money goes to people — corporations etc are just fronts. We’ve got to get people off the public trough. Reminds me of something I read. Some political philosopher said: Government is the fiction that allows people to live off other people.”
The American Tribune reported on other news from DOGE after the department discovered nearly $2 billion had been “misplaced” by the Biden administration. DOGE said, “$1.9 billion of HUD money was just recovered after being misplaced during the Biden administration due to a broken process. These funds were earmarked for the administration of financial services, but were no longer needed. @SecretaryTurner and @DOGE worked together to fix the issue and de-obligated the funds which are now available for other use by the Treasury.”

DOGE also shared a Valentine’s Day poem about its initiatives to cut spending. “Roses are red, violets are blue, Today, DOGE and 10 agencies made 586 wasteful contracts bid adieu! With a ceiling value of $2.1B and $445M in savings secured, A perfect Valentine’s gift for all taxpayers—well-earned and deserved!” the post began. It continued, “Today’s batch includes a $8.2M USDA contract for ‘environmental compliance services for the implementation of pilot projects developed under the partnership for climate smart commodities.’”
Furthermore, Musk also recently revealed that what he described as “utterly insane” fraud within Social Security. “At this point, I am 100% certain that the magnitude of the fraud in federal entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Disability, etc) exceeds the combined sum of every private scam you’ve ever heard by FAR. It’s not even close,” he wrote.
