Disney Star Rachel Zegler did an about-face on her comments about the “Snow White” adaptation in which she was the lead. After calling the movie off-putting and claiming that the original did not fit with today’s ideas of political correctness, she spoke to Variety in an interview in which she gushed over what she now calls the “beloved” cartoon.
Zegler caught flak from all over the world as she bashed the original version of Disney’s “Snow White” a few months back. After using typical feminist talking point to admonish the cartoon, it was clear that Zegler was not a fan of the story that Disney originally chose to go with on the epic tale of Snow White and her seven dwarf friends.
Now, Zegler talked highly about the old cartoon and its significance to our culture as a whole, saying, “The cartoon is so beloved — it’s like a monumental moment in film history. It’s the first feature-length cartoon movie, to the point where it won honorary Oscars, and all these amazing things that happened for that film are the reason that you and I get to sit here today, because it made Disney what it is.”
The interview featured Rachel Zegler and fellow Disney star, who were in the news for all the wrong reasons after starring in The “Little Mermaid,” Halle Bailey. The pair talked about all of the trouble that they have had as a consequence of the backlash for comments about their respective films and for bucking the trend with certain casting choices that the directors of each film made.
Zegler, according to the Daily Wire, said the following of “Snow White.” “It’s no longer 1937, and we absolutely wrote a ‘Snow White’ — she’s not going to be saved by a prince! And she’s not gonna be dreaming about true love. She’ll be dreaming about becoming a leader she knows she can be.”
Zegler was clear that she thought that “Snow White” did not need a prince to save her from her slumber and that the film should not be about a male hero being needed in every tale about a woman. She continued on, saying that even as a young child, she knew this to be true. “I think I watched it once and never picked it up again. I’m being so serious.”
Zegler is now working on the set of a new film, the prequel to the hit young adult book series “The Hunger Games.” Zegler has seen her star growing in recent years and now finds herself on her second high-profile film of the year. With that success, she has found a new way to block out the hate that she sometimes receives online.
She said, “I feel so thankful for those moments because it started to make me feel like solid Teflon. That nothing can hurt anymore because they’ve said the worst that can be said. You just say, “Thank you so much for this. I have a lot of love in my life, and I’m very thankful.” We get to do our work and have that speak for itself instead.”
