The New York Times has received substantial backlash for its coverage of the tragic death of NYPD officer Jonathan Diller. The New York Post sounded off on the outlet after it reported on comments made by Stephanie Dillow, the widow of the murdered officer.
For background, Stephanie received a standing ovation as she approached the microphone to begin speaking at her husband’s funeral. “How many more police officers and how many more families have to make the ultimate sacrifice before we start protecting them?” she asked. Aside from just her husband, she also put a spotlight on other recent police officers who have been tragically killed on the job.
The New York Post subsequently published a critical editorial titled, “The New York Times’ disgraceful, deceitful ‘report’ on Detective Diller’s funeral,” which asserted the remarks “somehow turned out to be news not fit to print for the New York Times.”
“Her words made the front page of The Post and even the hyperleft Daily News; nebbishy Newsday at least put the funeral on Page One,” according to the New York Post. “Yet the Times stuck its report on page A21, without even a ‘tracer’ on the front page. (The one local story that got that privilege was about… new city trash containers.) The article quoted the widow’s eulogy, but not her most newsworthy appeal.”
The Post continued criticizing The Times, calling out how the outlet spun its article on Stephanie Diller to criticize conservatives. The piece added, “Not even in the online version, with no space limit at all, though it ran 1,100-plus words. But the Times did find room for the ever-important ‘Republicans pounce’ angle: nearly 300 words on how ‘Some people — particularly Republicans — have seized on the killing as emblematic of what they consider the lax laws and public safety policies promoted by New York Democrats,’ when, the article ‘explained,’ major crime reports in the city are down 2% this year over last.”
The American Tribune reported extensively on comments from former President Donald Trump who attended the wake of Jonathan Diller. Trump honored the memory of Officer Diller while speaking very highly of his family.
“I just visited with a very beautiful wife that now doesn’t have her husband. Stephanie was just incredible. Their child brand new, beautiful baby city there innocent as can be. Doesn’t know how his life has been changed. But the Diller family will, you’ll never be the same. You can never be the same,” the former president said.
The GOP frontrunner called out the pervasive soft-on-crime attitude, maintaining that we must return to the rule of law. “And we have to stop it. We have to stop it. We have to get back to law and order we have to do a lot of things differently because this is not working. This is happening too often,” he said.
While continuing to emphasize how things need to “toughen up” the president noted what an honor it was for him to attend the wake. “It’s an honor to be here and again. I want to just thank all of you folks for allowing us in Bruce. Thank you. Bruce has been a friend of mine for a long time. He’s done an incredible job out here. But this is such a sad occasion. The only thing we can say is maybe something is going to be learned. We’ve got to toughen it up. We’ve got to strengthen it up,” Trump added.
