Famous actor Dennis Quaid’s recent biopic “Reagan” about former President Ronald Reagan massively outperformed its expectations over Labor Day weekend. The film was a close contender with other major blockbuster titles such as “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which have smashed the box office. Aside from Quaid, who stars as Reagan, the film features a star-studded cast, including Jon Voight and Penelope Ann Miller.
Between Friday and Sunday, “Reagan” raked in roughly $7.4 million, where estimates suggest total earnings over the four-day weekend could exceed $9 million. As to be expected with a film about one of the most popular Republican presidents of all time, liberal critics largely dismissed “Reagan,” giving it a score of 22%. However, the audience score was the polar opposite, attaining a rating of 98%.
“Oscar-winning performances for Quaid, Voight, and Miller in this heartfelt biopic that pays homage to one of America’s most beloved, admired, and effective Presidents. Standing ovation in a packed theater shows how the audience really loved the subject matter and film,” one reviewer wrote, praising the film and its portrayal of the beloved Ronald Reagan.
“Excellent film! Acting superb! Wonderful biopic about a remarkable man. Really liked how the story was told without extreme partisan position. At the end of the showing, the audience burst into applause, something I haven’t experienced in years!” another person wrote about the film.
Quaid recently spoke about his hit biopic with Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro.“Reagan was my favorite president,” he explained. “I voted for Jimmy Carter in ’76. It was the first time I could vote, but then I voted for Reagan in ’80.” The actor further explained how he sought to accurately portray Ronald Reagan onscreen.
“That’s the thing between the impersonation and getting to the person about what makes them tick. And there was that thing of Reagan I heard from everyone that knew him, there’s this impenetrable space that he always had that, you know, this is the ‘Great Communicator,’ quite jovial of a person, but there was this place that you couldn’t get past as well, a very private place. And I think that was always there with him from childhood, really,” he said.
The American Tribune reported on other comments from Quaid regarding the recent movie and how it relates to today’s political environment. “These days remind me very much of 1978, ‘79 in the country, with the economy, the Middle East, Iran. There was a malaise during the Carter administration that was admitted, and along came Mr. Reagan. And he asked people: Are you better off than you were four years ago? And I think you can ask the same question today,” he said.
Quaid has also emphasized his support for former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election. “People might call him an a-hole, but he’s my a-hole.” He added, “I think I’m gonna vote for him in the next election,” he told Piers Morgan. “It just makes sense. I was ready not to vote for Trump, until what I saw is, more than politics, I see a weaponization of our justice system and a challenge to our Constitution.”
